Stories from 12th June 1943

W/OII B. D. Kirkham. RCAF, 419 Sqd..

Sgt Kirkham was taken POW after Halifax DT616 VR-K was shot down on the 12th of June 1943. He was promoted to Warrant Officer2 whilst in captivity.

The crew were:

  • Sgt B.D.Kirkham
  • Sgt R.J.Hamilton
  • Sgt H.A.Taylor
  • Sgt D.B.Whittaker
  • Sgt F.J.Callaghan
  • Sgt J.A.Mills
  • Sgt D.L.Gray

P/O James Albert Mills. RCAF, wireless operator 419 Sqd..

From my recollection, my Dad, James Mills, was shot down on a bombing mission over the Ruhr Valley by two me109s. He said they riddled the aircraft from nose to tail, the cannon holes not an inch apart and yet not one of them was hit, after being ordered to bail, they stayed and got both meshersmits. He clipped his head on the tail wing as he bailed out and was unconsious when landing, and he lost a boot on the jump. He went to a farmhouse, the old german couple were quite alarmed until he produced a picture of jesus or mary and then it was all ....sit , eat .....relax until the Gestapo walked in a couple hours later with their lugers out, off to the stalag for 4 yrs.

He said the germans had civies on under their uniforms when they heard the barrage in the very near vicinity, they knew the war was done. He said most of the guards were pretty good blokes. Upon liberation, most of them just threw their flight jackets and what not into the ditch. Upon landing somewhere in England, a bbc reporter grabbed the first two guys and interviewed them, I remember, as a kid, listening to the old 78 over and over. It was James Albert Mills and Gus Morrison telling a 2 minute story of camplife. Does anyone have a copy? My sister lost that old record and his caterpiller pin. Dad went in to camp 6 foot 2 and 245 lbs, came out 6 foot and 100 pounds, They didnt eat well. he was diagnosed for a pension with anxiety neurosis and our govt gave him a really cheesey pittance of a pension, which he fought all his life to have increased. It didn't happen.

I would love to hear from any one who may have been in Stalag 357 or in 419 Moose Squadron that may have known him. Guess I should have done this 25 yrs ago. Its not until one reaches the age where one truly appreciates the caliber of men and women then and the guts they had to fight and give their life for the beauty and freedom we take for granted today.

Bill Mills

Sgt. Thomas William Reynolds Daniel. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 78 Squadron. (d.12th June 1943)

I never met Tom Daniel, he was my mother's cousin. His picture in his flying suit bearing the Welsh Dragon, lived on the wall in my Grandmothers sitting room adjacent to my mother's in her WREN uniform. He must have been exceptionally brave as he was a tail gunner. The family story says he volunteered for his final flight. I have visited his grave and those of all the crew of the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley in Eindhoven General Cemetery in the Netherlands.

Sgt. Frederick Anderson. Royal Air Force, 12 Squadron. (d.12th June 1943)

My great-uncle Sergeant Frederick Anderson served as a Mid-Upper Gunner with 12 Squadron, Royal Air Force stationed at RAF Wickenby during WWII. Frederick was born in Bournemouth on 21st July, 1920. His serial number was 626653.

He died in the early hours of Saturday 12th June, 1943 aged 22 when Lancaster PH-F W4373 was shot down between Neuss and Holziem during a raid on Dusseldorf (part of a force of 326 Lancasters, 202 Halifaxes, 143 Wellingtons, 99 Stirlings and 13 Mosquitoes).

The full crew of PH-F W4373 on this mission were:

  • Pilot - Flight Lieutenant Patrick Raymond Ford (aged 22, Royal Australian Air Force) Killed. A414132.
  • Navigator (Nav) - Sgt James Albert Osborn (aged 25) Killed. 657839.
  • Wireless Technician (W.T.) - Sgt Myer Harris (aged 22) Killed. 953174.
  • Bomb Aimer (B.A.) - Sgt Geoffrey William Twitty (aged 20) Killed. 1235304
  • Flight Engineer (Eng.) - Sgt Reginald Arthur Charles Avery (aged 20) Killed. 1336681.
  • Mid-Upper Gunner (M.U.G.) - Sgt Frederick Anderson (aged 22) Killed. 626653.
  • Rear Gunner (R.G.) - Sgt Marcus Walter Stone (aged 21) Killed. 1308435.

All 7 crew members are buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, they were originally buried in Dusseldorf Northern Cemetery.

I would be very interested to hear any information anybody might have about Frederick's time in the RAF and the crew members he served with.

Fl Lt William George "Johnny" Walker. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 144 Squadron. (d.12th June 1943)

William Walker served in the Royal Air Force in WW2 flying with 144 Squadron. He died 12th of June 1943 aged 31 years. He is buried in a joint grave with Pilot Officer Hawes, (Navigator), in St.Andrews Churchyard, Tangiers. I assume both bodies were unrecognisable, and it so followed as custom to bury them together. The Squadron at the time were tasked to attack enemy shipping in the Mediterranean from their base in Algeria.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
