Stories from 11th November 1944

1st Lt. Robert F. Russell. United States Air Force, 12th Fighter Squadron. (d.11th Nov 1944 )

I'm looking for the family of pilot, 1st Lt. Robert Russell of 13th Air Force, 18th FG, 12th Fighter Squadron who was killed in action on 11th November, 1944. as I have in my Great Uncle's logbook a photo of his plane. They took off from Wama Airfield on Morotai on a fighter sweep over Tacloban on Leyte. Intercepted by Japanese Zeros over Cebu at 9:30am, Major Smith claimed two Zeros shot down off the tail of Russell's aircraft. Another pilot 1st Lt. Squire radioed Russell to "get out of the area" and he acknowledged. He was last seen over the northern tip of Negros.

Cpl. Wilfred Owen Thomas. British Army, 2nd Btn. Royal Fusiliers. (d.11th Nov 1944)

I don't know a huge amount about Wilfred Owen Evans, Just that he was my Great Uncle on mum's side. He was serving in Italy in 1944 with the Royal Fusiliers 2nd Battalion and whilst on patrol came under fire. He was apparently the last JNCO killed in the Battalion in Italy. The patrol despatched to look for Wilf's patrol also came under fire. The Lt and Sgt killed in the subsequent action were the last Officer and SNCO killed.

If anyone can expand on this, or if anyone knew Wilf Thomas.I'd love to hear from you

Andrew Pritchard

F/Lt. Alexander McKay Cummings. Royal Air Force, 43 Squadron. (d.11th Nov 1944)

I am doing a search for the municipality of Vigonza, a small village at nort east of Padua, about soldier dead in the area during the 2 WW, with the aim to make a book for remember them on next 25th April. Checking the municipality archive, I found a letter (see attachment) dated 11th november 1944, regarding a english pilot crashed on 11th november 1944 at 13 oclock after a fighting. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission comunicated me that in Padua War Cemetry is buried one pilot dead on 11th november 1944, that is: Casualty: Flight Lieutenant Alexander McKay Cumming, 128858

Served With: 43 Sqdn. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died: 11th November 1944, Commemorated: Padua War Cemetery, Italy Plot III. Row F. Grave 14. Additional Information: Age 21 Son of Alexander and Louisa J. Cummings, of Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Dux Medallist of Larbert Central School, 1937.

But Commonwealth War Graves Commission dont hold any information on where and how Commonwealth war casualties died. Therefore with these information about pilot Cummings I am not sure he is the pilot Im looking for, infact. He could be captured same day before and not really shot down on 11th November 1944. Looking RAF museum website I see that exists a book regarding pilots dead in 2ndWW but is not advantageous to buy it only to give some information about one pilot. I wish know if he was realy shot down in Padua area on 11th november 1944 arround 13 oclock, what fighter he used (I think it is a Spitfire IX), what shot him down and other information you can have to verify if they match with Vigonza municipality archive letter.

Sgt. Cyril "Titch" Bayford. Royal Air Force, 57 Sqdn.. (d.11th November 1944)

My father, Sgt. Cyril Bayford of Bishops Stortford Herts. He was a Lancaster tail gunner with 57th Sqdn at East Kikby. His final mission was November 11th 1944 He was in Lancaster DX-H (LL-939). The Lancaster took off from East Kirkby at 16:54 and was hit by flak over Harburg at 19:27, finally crashing at Beckdorf at 19:45 hours. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I was just one month old when he was lost in action. I know so little about him and any information would be welcome.

After many years of research, in 2008 I was able to find the crash location site and with the help of the state archaeologist and an eye witness to the crash, in 2009 we were able to excavate the crash site and found literally hundred of items. We even found the pilot's wrist watch strap. The rest of the items were sent back to the original airfield at East Kirkby, Lincs and are now on display at the museum there.

Took off 1654 East Kirkby. Hit by flak and crash-landed circa 1927 near Beckdorf, 8 km SSW from Buxtehude. On the first impact one engine and the rear turret were torn away, the rest of the Lancaster bouncing back into the air and flying on for over a km before smashing back to earth. The two survivors are believed to have baled out, as did Sgt Brett but his parachute failed to deploy. He lies in Becklingen War Cemetery, while the others who died are buried in Hamburg Cemetery, Ohlsdorf. (David Burnham)
