Stories from 9th July 1943

Sgt. Wilfred Worthington. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 106 Squadron. (d.9th July 1943)

I was 12 years old when I heard that my Uncle Wilfred Worthington was missing and presumed dead. What I understand was, that the Lancaster was on fire, and the Canadian pilot was trying to return to base. I believe but, not certain, that 2 or 3 of the crew managed to bail out at a low altitude. My Uncle Wilfred was on the radio, the aircraft then blew up with full bomb load and nothing was found of the rest of the crew or aircraft.

I have tried to find out the facts of that mission, if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Harry Simkiss

F/O. Ramesh Chandra Datta. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 97 Squadron. (d.9th July 1943)

On 3 December 2000 I initiated the erection of a memorial to the crew of Lancaster ED 923 OF-V of 97 squadron. The aircraft was shot by LT Erlinghagen and crashed at the village of Bassenge (Belgium). The crew were: F/O R B D Palmer, F/O Ramesh C Datta, Sgts D Cameron, A R Harris, D C H Holdint, C V King and W Stephens. They all died in the crash and rest at the War Cemetery at Heverlee near Leuven.

Lt Erlinghagen was shot down a month later and crashed at Kerniel, Belgium, a few miles from the crash location of his victims a month earlier.

Pte. David John Wighton Larter. British Army, 6th Btn. Royal Norfolk Regiment. (d.9th July 1943)

My mother, Olive Hunt married her childhood sweetheart, David Larter, just two weeks before he sailed for Singapore. He enlisted with his three best friends, these were, his half-brother Edwin Sabberton, my mum's brother Tom Hunt and her sister's husband Horace Crisp. They were all captured by the Japanese and sent to work on the Thai-Burma railway. Only two of them returned home at the end of the war, these were Tom Hunt and Horace Crisp. David and Edwin's war graves are in the Kanchanaburi cemetary in Thailand.

June Melvin

CSM. Robert John Woollhouse. British Army, 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. (d.9th July 1943)

Robert Woollhouse was my grand father, he died when Horsa Glider 128 came down in the sea.

Karen Dwyer

Pte. William Henry Grice. British Army, 2nd Btn. South Staffordshire Regiment. (d.9th Jul 1943)

William Grice

William Grice was the son of Charles and May Grice. Much loved brother to Sheila Mary Ede who named her first child after him who sadly would have loved to have visited his memorial in Cassino Italy before she died but never made it.

We were always told we had a Uncle William who died in the war at the age of 21 years and how much he was loved and missed.

Denise Farlow

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
