Stories from 6th October 1944

Private John Ernest Goodwin. Army, Lincolnshire Regiment. (d.6th October 1944)

During the second World War the Allied and German soldiers, who were killed in Goirle, Noord Brabant, the Netherlands and in the neighbourhood, were buried at the Roman Catholic cemetery from the parish St. Jan in Goirle.

After the war the remains of the German soldiers were reburied in Ysselsteijn (near Venray) and most of the allied soldiers were reburied in Bergen op Zoom (War Cemetery and Canadian War Cemetery) and in Leopoldsburg (Belgium, War Cemetery).

At this moment there are 27 Allied graves in Goirle. Every year we commemorate the victims of World War II, both soldiers and civilians. We know their names, but who were the persons behind the names? What were their lives before they died? Where did they come from? How did they die? Under what circumstances?

It is my intention to give the victims a face, to write and keep the story behind the gravestones because we always will remember the soldier who died for our liberty. We can forget names, but not faces. I will try to write down all their stories for the next generation so they will know who was commemorated.

Maybe someone can help me with Private John Ernest Goodwin, Lincolnshire Regiment 4803844, who died on the 6th October 1944, age 26.

Send me a letter or an e-mail with additional information, a photograph or a copy of any personal document, which I can use for The Memory Book or a website. Thank you in advance for your help.

F/Lt Alfred Edward David Ashcroft. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 157 Squadron. (d.6th Oct 1944)

F/Lt Navigator Alfred E. D. Ashcroft, was killed in an air-crash with a Mosquito NF.MkXIX, serial number 678 of 157 Squadron, X1D: RS-A . His pilot William Vale was also killed. They were airborne at 1805 6 Oct 1944 from Swannington Airfield in support of the Main Force Dortmund operation.

Although the crash-site is unknown, my mother was a witness: it happened in Belgium, in the village of Drieslinter, Province: Vlaams-Brabant,at approximately 5 miles of the city Tienan (Tirlemont in French). I am looking for a photo of him and contact with any family members for the VVF Tienen Heritage Association.

P/O. James Alexander Rogers. Royal Air Force, 29 Squadron. (d.6th Oct 1944)

Pilot Officer James Rogers served with 29 Squadron and died on 6th October 1944.

F/Eng. Albert Reilly. Royal Air Force, 78 Squadron. (d.6 October 1944)

My late, would have been, uncle was killed in action on 6 October 1944 (aged 22) before I was born. Albert Reilly was a flight Engineer with 78 Squadron based at RAF Breighton, Yorkshire, when on a flight to bomb Germany he was killed when the aircraft Halifax Mk 3 MZ310 was in collision with another Halifax from 78 Squadron from RAF Breighton over Belgium/Holland, (Grand Bloksepolder) near Oude Tonge.

All crew from both Halifaxes were killed (14 crew) and my uncle was buried in the military cemetery at Bergen op Zoom.

I am trying to find out more information about what caused the collision and obtain a picture of my late uncle.

Coincidentally, Albert Reilly's own uncle, Albert Victor Reilly was killed in action in the 1st World War on 14 October 1918. He was a gunner in the Royal Filed Artillery and died only weeks before the end of the war.

It is a sad story for my mother's side of the family i.e. Reilly which I am endeavouring to try and find more information.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
