Stories from 3rd December 1942

Pte Alfred Hector Peterson. New Zealand Army, Nz Infantry 22nd Motor Btn. (d.3rd Dec 1942)

Alf was my Dad's cousin and Dad remembers seeing him off to war as a 10 year old. Alf was captured at Olympus Pass in Greece in his first action of the war approximately 16 April 1941. He was held as a POW at Stalag 18a. On the 3rd of December 1942 he was killed by a sentry. He is buried at Klagenfurt War Cemetery in Austria.

Apparently there is a Red Cross report from January 1943 that mentions Alfs death, it states that an inquiry was under way, but Alf was supposed to have threatened a sentry. There must have been more to it, as after the war a murder investigation was carried out.

I have a newspaper clipping sent to his mother, but it has no date. The clipping tells that the sentry responsible for killing Alf received a sentence of 17 years for his murder after being tried by the United Nations War Crimes Commission. An accomplice was still on the loose and believed to be in the Mediterranean area.

If anyone knows more or knew Alf I'd be interested to hear from them.

Graeme Moyle

Sgt. Everard Aloysius Aspell. Royal Air Force, 108 Squadron. (d.3rd December 1942)

Everard Aspell was born in New Zealand of Irish parents. He enlisted with the RAF Reserve during the outbreak of war. We only found out about him recently when my brother, who lives in Sydney, Aus met up with another Everard Aspell, who is of the same family. His great great grandfather was the brother of my grandmother.

Not sure of the circumstances of his death but do know he died on Malta and is buried in (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery, Malta. I will do more research and will certainly go to Malta to pay respects.

Noel Ahearne

Pte. Cecil Winchester Cook. British Army, 2nd Battalion Royal Hampshire Regiment. (d.3rd December 1942)

Cecil Cook was born in Ash, Surrey on 15th April 1919 the youngest son of Joshua Cook and Emily Jane Waters. He joined the Army and served in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Hampshire Regiment and attended a camp at Corfe Castle Camp, Swanage in 1939. He married a lady called Ivy in 1942. She was in the WAAF. He served with his regiment in November 1942 in Terboura, Tunisia, North Africa. He was killed in action on Thursday 3rd of December 1942. His body was not recovered. His name appears on the war memorial in Medjez-El-Bab, Beja, Tunisia and also the Ash War Memorial in Ash, Surrey.

Jan Stallard

Gnr. John Webb. British Army, 21st Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, 69th Bty. Royal Artillery . (d.3rd December 1942)

He joined up on 1st of September 1939 and was wounded and captured on 20th of March 1942 in the Netherlands East Indies. Jack was sent to a Japanese POW Camp, Fukuoka 5158 where he died on 3rd of December 1942.

Bryan Woodward

L/Bdr. William Albert Johnny John. British Army, 89th Bty. 35th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.3rd Dec 1942)

William John was captured by the Japanese and spent seven months in a POW camp in Tandjong Priok, Batavia, Java, remaining there until October 1942. He was then transported to Japan on the hellships, Yoshida Maru and Singapore Maru, and developed dysentery whilst on board. He arrived in Japan during October 1942, where he was left on board ship. Finally, at the end of November, he was transported to Moji Hospital Camp, where he died on 3rd of December 1942.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
