Joseph Edward Grime . Home Guard, ARP. (d.3rd August 1944)

I'm researching our Family Tree and we have very little information about my husbands' paternal grandfather, whom we believe served in London in the ARP, being killed in either Croydon or Crawley towards the end of the war, in active duty. His name was Joseph Grime and he was from Stoke on Trent. We think he'd have been born around 1908 and he was married to Florence. He left two children, Norman and Pauline, who, as they were so young at the time, didn't know very much about their daddy, only that they should be very proud of him. Steve, my husband, lost his dad very young too, so we're at a bit of a loss to find out more about this brave man. I have a lead on his gravestone in Stoke, so next time we're up there we'll be searching it out but in the meantime I'll let you know if I find out anything else. If anyone has any suggestions for searches for him, we'd be so very grateful. UPDATE: Joseph Edward Grime served with the Home Guard. He died at Ministry of Works Depot., Aurelia Road, Croydon on the 3rd of August 1944. He was aged 38 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Grime, of 61 Yoxall Avenue, Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent and husband of Florence Mary Grime, of 1 Oxford Crescent, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent.

Sgt. James Burke. Royal Air Force, 460 Squadron. (d.3rd Aug 1944)

James Burke was a crew member of Lancaster PB125 AR-L, they took off at 11:38 on the 3rd of August 1944 from Binbrook to attack the flying-bomb storage site. I was told that when the crew bailed out they were shot and killed as they floated down, over St Maclou-De Folleville. The crew where all are buried in the local churchyard alongside three airmen from 57 sqdn who were killed four weeks earlier. Some years later the graves were opened, over i.d. issues, and his signet ring with JB on, was returned to the family.

The crew were:

  • F/O R.C.Fidock
  • Sgt D.C.Stock
  • F/S R.H.Jones
  • F/S W.R.Hullett
  • F/S K.F.Heidtman

Gnr. Joseph Albert Mease. British Army, "C" Bty, 12 (Honourable Artillery Company) Regt. Royal Horse Artillery. (d.3rd Aug 1944)

Joseph was born on the 13th August 1916 in Jarrow. He was the eldest son of James Mease and Lilian May (Havelock) Mease and he was the brother of James (Jimmy). In 1931 aged just 15 years old and on his own, he left the North East of England to go to Kettering in Northamptonshire to look for work in the boot and shoe town. He was employed by Messrs. F. Wright & Co. as a boot and shoe operative. On October 8th 1938 Joseph married Dora Emberton who was the eldest daughter of Albert Victor Emberton and Annie (Roberts) Emberton. A daughter Sonia was born of this marriage on 15th November 1939 in the village of Broughton, Northamptonshire.

Joseph joined the army in WWII and was sent overseas in 1942 where he fought in Africa and Italy. On July 5th 1944 he sustained a head wound from which he wouldn't recover. He died aged 27. Joseph is buried in Naples War Cemetery and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.
