  • The Wartime Memories Project has been running for 24 years. If you would like to support us, a donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated, annually we need to raise enough funds to pay for our web hosting and admin or this site will vanish from the web.
  • 22nd April 2024 - Please note we currently have a huge backlog of submitted material, our volunteers are working through this as quickly as possible and all names, stories and photos will be added to the site. If you have already submitted a story to the site and your UID reference number is higher than 263973 your information is still in the queue, please do not resubmit, we are working through them as quickly as possible.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Rfm. Samuel Craig. British Army, Royal Ulster Rifles. (d.2nd June 1940)

Samuel Craig was born in 1910 in Glynn. He enlisted in 1930 and was Killed in action between the dates 28 of May 1940 and2nd of June 1940 aged 30 He is remembered on the Dunkirk Memorial, my late Grandfather's youngest brother.

John Blair



Pte Francis William Doran. British Army, 4th Btn Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment). (d.2nd Jun 1940)

Francis Wiliam Doran died aged 21 whilst serving with the 4th Green Howards. He was born in Jarrow in 1919, the son of Francis and Margaret Doran (nee Usher).

Francis is remembered on the Dunkirk Memorial.

Vin Mullen



Dvr. Leonard Somerfield. British Army, 1 Corps HQ Royal Army Service Corps. (d.2nd June 1940)

My great uncle, Leonard Somerfield, was born in April 1919. His twin sister Evelyn was my grandmother. Leonard was a member of the BEF in France. He was a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps, service number 115116, attached to 1 Corps HQ. He was killed in the evacuation of Dunkirk. It was believed he made it, onto a ship, which was attacked and sunk. Leonard has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial. He was 21 years old. RIP Leonard. Never forgotten.




Pte. Arthur Wright. British Army, 1st Btn. King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. (d.2nd June 1940)

Private Wright was the Son of James Leroy and Charlotte Wright; nephew of Louisa F. Cragg, of Queensbury, Yorkshire.

He was 20 when he died and is buried in the Dovre Churchyard in Norway.

RSM. David Maxwell Phillips. British Army, 1st Btn. Royal Irish Fusiliers. (d.2nd Jun 1940)

David Phillips was fatally wounded during defence of Dunkirk with the Royal Irish Fusiliers, he returned to England and died of his injuries.

Philip Croft



Pte. Robert Ballinger. British Army, 2nd Btn. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). (d.2nd Jun 1940)

Robert Ballinger died between 31st of May and 2nd of June 1940. He is buried at Middelkerke Communal Cemetery in Belgium.




Sgt. Charles Herbert Godsall. British Army, 2nd Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). (d.btwn. 25th May and 4th June 1940)

Herbert Godsall was my great uncle, he is buried in Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery.

Pte. John Charles Glaister. British Army, 1st Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment. (d.2nd June 1940)

John Glaiser was my father's brother, he served with the BEF in France.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.














The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
