Stories from 1st July 1944

Grdsmn. James Frederick Corbett. Britsh Army, Coldstream Guards.

I'm interested in learning more of my Grandfathers exploits during WWII after joining the Coldstream Guards in October 1940. He seems to have been transferred to and from various Battalions within the Coldstream Guards and records state that he worked as a sign writer and despatch rider. He was shot and injured on 1st July 1944 by a German sniper whilst riding a motorcyle, he escaped by riding the vehicle into a corn field.

Sadly my grandfather died before I was born so I of my information comes via my father. I hope someone can help. I have my grandfathers full service history if this would help.

Jim Corbett

Sergeant Thomas White. RAF, 626 Squadron. (d.1st July 1944)

Thomas White was in 626 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, service no 925205 and flew the Lancaster bomber for Bomber Command. He was a Sergeant (Flt. Engineer). On the 30 June/1 July 1944 (quote from RAF) "118 Lancasters of No: 1 Group attacked railway yards at the small town of Vierzon, south of Orleans and bombed with great accuracy, a success for No: 1 Group's own marking flight. 11 Lancasters were lost, nearly 12% of the force". Tom was shot down over France and killed on 1 July 1944. He is commemorated at Theillay Communal Cemetery, Loire et Cher, France.

He had covered a certain amount of flights but due to the shortage of pilots was given extra flights to do and it was on this final flight that he got shot down and killed.

Rachel Merritt

L/Sgt. Richard John Lofts. British Army, 2/4th Btn. Royal Hampshire Regiment. (d.1st July 1944)

I know very little about Dick Lofts. He was my uncle on my father's side of the family. I know he was wounded by a grenade or shell. They were unable to stop the bleeding or get him to a hospital in time. He is buried in Assisi in Italy, where I have visited the war graves which are in the most beautiful setting. My father, Robert Lofts before he died, wished to have his ashes interred with his brother.

Lt. Henry Desmond Penkivel Minchin. British Army, 6th Btn. Kings Own Scottish Borderers. (d.1st Jul 1944)

Henry Minchin is believed to have been born in Sussex ca 1923, and to have studied at Edinburgh University. He is not listed in the University records as a graduate, and I am still trying to trace his matriculation record.

He is believed to have died in the Western European Campaign in 1944/45. His name appears on the University's Old College War memorial and appears to have been added after the initial installation of the WW2 names.

I am compiling and revising a WW2 Roll of Honour for the University of Edinburgh Graduates' Association and would welcome any further information that we might share.

Peter Freshwater

Flt.Sgt. John Eason Sharpley. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve , 100 Squadron. (d.1st July 1944)

John Sharpley's Lancaster was shot down on 1 July 1944 5km NNE of Lamotte Buevron, France - hit by flak. I do not know if any of the crew survived.

John was killed and was buried in Vouzon Communal Cemetary, 3 miles East of Lamotte Buevron, according to CWGC he was the only airman to be buried there.

The crew were:

  • 1. Flt. Sergt John Eason Sharpley RAFVR
  • 2. P.O. William Kay RAF
  • 3. Sgt H. Dale RAF
  • 4. Flt. Sgt Fred H. Fulsher RCAF
  • 5. Flying Off. J. D. Frink USAAF
  • 6. Sgt Ernest Harrop RAF
  • 7. Sgt William E. Struck RCAF

Philip Haley

Sgt. Stephen Anderson. British Army, 30th Field Regiment Royal Artillery . (d.1st July 1944)

Stephen Anderson served with 30th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.

Pat Buck

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
