Want to know more about Second Battle of El Alamein?

There are:64 items tagged Second Battle of El Alamein available in our Library

These include information on officers, regimental histories, letters, diary entries, personal accounts and information about actions during the Second World War.

A/SM. George Makison Royal Artillery

George Makison was my dad. He was in the Royal Artillery reserves from 1938 through to the Second World War. He passed exams to join the Royal Air Force, but was a trained gunner and was needed in the Army, where he was offered a commission but preferred to remain an NCO. He was a desert rat who fought at El Alamein and was, I believe, injured in 1942. He received the long service medal.

My dad was a member of the ex-servicemen’s fellowship until his death in 1975. There is a photo of him doing the Highland Fling at one of the reunions. He was a family man and a loyal friend. He had a terrific sense of humour and he was a wise human being. His former comrades attended his funeral and carried his coffin. He was much missed after he died, and I miss him every day 44 years later.

Mary Chapman

Sgt. Walter Carrington 77th (Highland) Field Regiment Royal Artillery

My father Walter Carrington served in North Africa, at El Alamein I believe, then into Italy and eventually Greece, where I think he was wounded by a piece of shrapnel from a grenade thrown by a woman. My parents separated in 1954 or 1955. With my mother, he had 5 children including triplet boys born in 1950.

Simon Carrington

Pte. Frederick William Roy Beeson 2/5th Btn. Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment

Frederick Beeson was my father. He fought at El Alamein, and was mentioned in the book titled El Alamein along with his sergeant, a man named Baer. I know little more than that.

CSM. Henry Marr MBE. 7th Btn., HQ Coy Black Watch

Henry Marr was recommended for an award on the 31st of Jan 1943.

During the very early states of the Alamein battle, all three officers of the 7th Black Watch Anti Tank Platoon were either killed or wounded and since this time CSM Marr has commanded the platoon with great courage and devotion to duty. He has during the whole of this period carried out his duties, which have virtually been equivalent to the duties of three officers, with relentless energy and determination. During the later stages of the Alamein battle the position of the anti tank guns had frequently to be changed under heavy fire and on different occasions since then the gins have had to be got into position under dangerous and difficult conditions and on ever occasions CSM Marr has personally supervised the movement and siting of the guns. He has during the whole period commanded the platoon in a most outstanding manner and has displayed very fine powers of leadership and command. His conduct in action has been a most excellent example in this unit.

The awarding of an MBE was published in the London Gazette on 14th of October 1943.
