I am LJOWSLEY@AOL.com I have no story at this time. Right now I am helping my sister with a US History project which requires her to interview a veteran from WW2, Korea, and Viet Nam. Viet Nam vets are still very plentiful and we have gotten several great interviews. Sadly all of the WW 2 vets they were enighbors, friends and family memberare gone, and we are not having much luck find Lorean war vets either. If any of you WW2 and Korean War veterans would like to respond to these questions (No names necessary, if you would like to remain anonymous)please E-mail your responses to me: LJOWSLEY@AOL.com 1.When were you deployed? 2. Where were you deployed? 3. What were your duties during your deployment? 4.By performing your duties, what part do you feel you played in changing the course of American history at that time? We appreciate any responses you would care to send. They need not be lengthy. Thanking you in advance for your assistance.
William Hugh Martindale
I am looking for any information on my grandfather William Hugh Martindale. He served in the war either as Canadian Army or British Navy. My mother was put up for adoption at a very young age and so we have very little information about him, other than he did serve in the war and he was married for a time to Nora Shaw. They lived at some point in Ontario Canada. Thank you!
2nd Lt. Edward W. Freeman Royal Engineers
I am in search of my late grandfather Edward W Freeman who was an Ex.British army officer in the Royal Engineers. 1939 - 1947.
Many many hours, months I have been researching sites and sites for him, but having such little information and no d.o.b or service no. I am starting to think my time is up?
Born in London, stationed in West Sussex. He was commissioned 15th February 1941 as 2nd Lieutenant and posted to Singapore, this is the only memory my mother has of him.
She also has letters from him whilst serving in the war. She last heard of him in 1947 (She was 5yrs old). There was No other contact. When she was able to write herself she wrote to the war office and the RE. hoping to locate and reunite with her father. There was No reply.
60years have now passed on and I as a daughter having listened to her story, you can feel her sadness which makes me more determined to keep going.
She lost her husband (my father) to cancer Christmas Day 2006 after 40yrs of marriage. In her lifetime she has NOW lost the 2 men that meant the world too her.
Please,Please, anyone who may of known Edward W Freeman could you make contact as this would mean the world too us and a final closure for my mother.

He worked for the New Zealand Film Unit and was awarded an MBE for bravery whilst filming the horrors of war. He filmed on several fronts including Tripoli, Fiji and Singapore. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for information on the Eagle Squadron, as three American personnel died when they got lost on the way to refuel at RAF Andreas, crashing into the surrounding hills in poor visibility. I am trying to find out more about the members of Eagle Squadron as one of them lodged with my Mother whilst convalescing.
James Richard Mulock
Is there anyone out there who remembers our father. He was a hero in Blackwall,London as he joined the Raf and became a pilot. Being from a working class background this was viewed in his home patch to be a wonderful thing. We know as his daughters that the war laid heavy on him and though he was offered a commission at the close of the war he couldn't wait to get back into civvys. For years he suffered terrible nightmares and would not tell his family of what was troubling him, only other men would he open up too, so we know very little of what happened to him in the war. He always loved aircraft and went out of his way to go to any airshows in the vicinity. Hoping to hear from anyone that could shed some light unto these days as he is now unable to tell us as he died in 1997. Marianne Thomas (his eldest daughter)
Private John Kay
Iam trying to find some details of my fathers war years. He enlisted at the start of the war aged 20. I know he was in B.E.F. and escaped back to Britain south of Dunkirk near St. Valery. I believe he went AWOL once or twice afterwards. He was in Gibralter for a while, maybe before the invasion of Italy 1943 and was captured around Sorrento during the invasion. He was marched up through Italy and on to a POW camp in Poland until the end of the war.
I am trying to find any information about a United States cruise ship during WW2 called the SS Argentina. My Grandfather was sent to France on this ship, then put on a train to fight in Germany. Thanks
Jean Wilson
Please help us. We are searching for information on a Jean Wilson who lived in Warrington, England during the Second World War. We have information that Jean married and went to America sometime after 1948. We think she may have married a GI based at Burtonwood, Warrington. Who did she marry and where did they go? Jean was born around 1925. She may have other children in the USA who aren't aware their half sister in England is desperate to find them. Please help. Anyone who was at Burtonwood at the time and remembers this lady please get in contact with us. Any tiny detail at all would be helpful.

Father informed that Ann was to be adopted.Doreen was my Mother and lived in the Cross Lane area of Gravesend. Would not tell me anything about my Father only that his name was Jack/John and he was a Pilot and Canadian. Possibly the "Early Canadian Flight" 1940? Any one help. Stanley C Smith
I am trying to trace any details of Stan Smith. He must have been posted in the UK during WW2 as he was engaged to my mother Rita Elderkin. He saw action in Italy and was wounded, I believe he suffered a chipped spine due to a bombing incident. When he returned to the UK he would not marry my mother as he didn't want to burden her as an invalid. I don't even know if he is still alive as my mother is 86 now and I believe he was about 7yrs older. She has always held him in deep affection and I would love to find out more about him. If any one can help I would be very grateful.
Harry Williams 1st Airborne Division
my name is Ruud Slangen and I live in the Netherlands. Being very interested in what happened in my country 64 years ago I do research on the Battle of Arnhem. I also give battle-tours on the Arnhem-Oosterbeek environment. A couple of weeks ago two of my guests came from Wales. Robert's former father-in-law was an Arnhem veteran, Harry Williams, who passed away in 1973. Due to ptivate circumstances, no further details are known, accept that Mr Williams lived in Penmaenmawr in Wales and that he owned a fish and chip shop. No army number nore unit. Who can help me out finding this veterans unit or army number? Every information will be treatened with respect.
Cox
My father recently visited The Lamb Inn at Great Rissington. On the wall were various photos of ww2 airmen and stories attached. One concerning a shot down plane, possibly a Wellington, which came down near The Lamb Inn at Great Rissington in 1943. All on board died but for one John Smith. Of those who died a Mr Cox is mentioned I think he was a navigator. Can anyone please give me any info on this person as my father thinks he may be a long forgotten cousin.
Peace
I found this item in The Times Feb 22 1940 pg 10, Issue 48546 Col A FREED FROM GERMAN PRISONS, British Women Home Again
Mentioned were 10 British Women who landed at Gravesend 21 Feb 1940 from a Dutch steamer who were taken to a London Hostel. Evidently they had been some months in a German prison. Their names were Miss Ida Daniels of Reading, Mrs Sophie Brown, Misses Mary & Sarah Rundstein and Miss Polly Eder, Maud Vickery, Miss Edith Allen, Miss Dorothy Woolley, Miss Kelly, Joy Rogers aged 19, a dancer who left the party at Rotterdam to fly home, and the one I am very interested in, Mrs Willam Peace who was aged about 60, Polish, married to an Englishman in Palestine.
I would like help to know where I could find any information about the prison they were evacuated from, the name of the Dutch steamer, or anything that would assist me finding the first name of Mrs Peace.
She was married to my great uncle William Iverach Peace who was born in Scotland,1879. He died in Palestine October 1940 and is buried in Jerusalem. I think Mrs Peace had at least two grown children, but again I do not know their names or where they were born. Can anyone assist by telling me where I could find information?
Tpr. Patrick Rogers 2nd Armoured Squadron Army-Depot Cavalry Corps (d. March 1980)
I am researching for a book that I am writing titled ` A Tribute To Tpr Patrick Rogers...(1940-1945) The Irish Army Cavalry Corps E/43267
If anyone has any information about him or group photographs we would be well pleased and all contributions will be acknowledged in my book. I am planning to publish next year and this book will be the most informative book in verse that we will have seen for a long time. Tpr was a durationist which meant that he signed up for the duration of the war - I am sure proud to have married into the family and this is my way to say `thank you` to all these brave men whose family are not always aware of the efforts they made to give us all the life we have today. Roy Rogers Tpr Patrick`s son and I doctor Rosaleen O`Brien (Roy`s wife) will look forward to all assistance in this project that is so dear to our heart. His father worked in the local bakery maybe that is why Roy is an excellent cook.
Thomas Burrows
My partner was born near Worcester in April 1946 and lived in Evesham. Her Mother was Ellen Emily Alice Preece and her father was an American serviceman Thomas Burrows, serving with the US Army Air Force apparently serving nearby. It is not known if he was ground crew or a flyer. My partner never saw him. It is assumed that he went back to America not knowing he had a daughter here. Her mother did not talk about him ever and has since died. My partner is the only child and her mother lived and worked on an estate around Evesham at the time. A happy time
When she was about 5, the Estate was sold off and so, having no employment, her mother took her back to South London where she was born, to live with her Mother. It was a cultural shock to go from beautiful and rural Evesham to the bomb sites of Lambeth in South London. And of course she had a Worcestershire accent, so then she became the butt of the children's jokes. It was not a good time in her life as her Grandmother had very little time for her (being born out of wedlock) she never had Christmas decorations or anyone to tell her bedtime stories. Her mother had to work 6 days a week and give half her wages to her Mother and bring up a child on the other half. Her Grandfather was kinder though.
She does not know if her father is still alive, has he tried to find her or did he marry in the USA and she has relatives over there. Does anyone know of any American Air Bases in the area of Evesham so that we can contact the relevant people in America. One of my partner's aunts her met her father in 1945 told her she is the spitting image of him... Unfortunately, she too has passed away. If anyone could help it would be great.
Flt Sgt Bernard Leslie Porter
I am trying to trace anyone who was in the evacuation of Crete. My father, Barney Porter, was one of the last to leave and told us very little of the fierce fighting except that the serving men were held back in order for the Belgian royal family to get out on one of the last planes. Does anyone know anything of this?
Clifford William " " Johnson (d. )
I am trying to find details of where and when a relative of mine was interned during the 2nd World War. His name is Clifford William Johnson, he is believed to have been a wireless operator with the RAF and was captured near Singapore around Feb. 1942. He was sent to a POW camp on Java, escaped with a small group then was recaptured and sent to another POW camp on an island off Java. He was digging a mass grave when the bomb dropped on Hiroshima and was liberated.
I plan to travel to Indonesia and would love any information of where he was imprisoned so I may visit the area. If anyone can help in any way I'd appreciate it greatly.
RMN2 Dick J. Rogavin U.S.S. Moose
I was 16 years old when I had my first contact with a British Navy Man. We lived in Sunnyside, Queens, Long Island, NY during the war years. My step Dad worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard when the HMS Penelope came in for major repairs, the year was 1942. Folks at the Navy Yard were asked to invite members of the HMS Penelope's crew to stay at their homes during her stay at the "Yard". I believe the young man who stayed with us was a CPO but I have been unable to find his name, much to my sorrow. Needless to say I was a very impressed young lad with this young British Navy Man. I am certain he influenced my decision to join the U.S.N. which I did when I was 17. This British Navy man stayed with us for a couple of months while the repairs were being carried out on his ship, it was a fantastic event for a young impressionable 16 year old lad.
I served in the USN and was a radioman on the USS Moose in the Pacific area during World War 11
Able Seaman William George Bond HMS Emerald
I am attempting to trace my father, William George Bond's service history. On my birth certificate, he was listed as and A/B serving aboard "HMS Emerald" in April 1935(year of my birth). After WW2, I am told he joined the Merchant navy, sailing with Cunard from Liverpool to mainly to USA. I have no other records-documentation belonging to him. Any confirmation, or information would be gratefully received.
F/O Thomas Matheson (d. )
We are looking for a Canadian from WW2 who was a pilot in the RCAF. He was stationed in England during 1943, and probably before and after this time. We have a photograph of him showing him in his uniform and forage cap. He is wearing a 39-45 Star and a Volunteers Medal with maple leaf clasp. He also has an 'ops wing' on the left breast pocket. We believe his name to be Thomas Matheson or similar. He survived the war as the photograph was sent from Canada about 1946. Please contact me if you feel you can help find this man
William Browne
I am looking for my grandfather William Browne who lived in England and served in WWII he was posted in Calcutta, India during 1943-46. He left India on the 1st August, 1946. He has family in England I presume children, grand children or may be great grand children. I hope he is alive if he is then he must be in his 80's. Anyone reading this and knows him please contact me.
George " " Scable
My name is Lisette Richardeau, I was madly in love during WW2 with a British Soldier in a tank division. He was on his way to the Battle of the Bulge. His name was George Scable and I want to know if he is still alive, I lost track of him in 1945. I have been ill over this loss and still want to get some infformation on his life or death. I lived in Huy in Belgium and he was stationed there and stayed at our house for a few days. Please can anyone help to find him? I am married now and live in CA. USA. Thank you.
Sgt. Leslie Smith Queens Own Cameron Highlanders
I am looking information about my biological father to see if I may have any half brothers or sisters somewhere. My father did not take on the responsibility of having a son, and left as he was not married to my mother. I think he was at Fort George in November 1943, his name was Leslie Smith and he was English, I think he was from London. I also believe he had medals for rifle shooting. My mother's husband was Ewart Munro from Inverness and they stayed at No.5 Telford street Inverness and may have known my father as he was in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders also. So far I have had no luck. Any information will be gratefully received.
James Peck
I am trying to find a James Peck that flew in the secret missions out of Tempsford in 1943/44. He would be my Grandfather but we know nothing about him other than his name and that he flew out of Tempsford and would have died in 1943 or 1944.
I can only find one James Peck listed in the Commonwealth War records that flew in the RAF, he was a sergeant from Nova Scotia and was killed on the 20th March 1944 and is buried at Brookwood in Surrey.
Can anyone confirm if James Peck did indeed fly out of Tempsford on any secret missions?
Kathleen Laura Prendergast Royal Australian Medical Corps
I am trying to trace my relative, Kathleen Prendergast, her last known residence was with the RAMC in Germnay in 1949.
Charles Edward Newham (d.1940)
I am looking for info about my uncle, Ted Newham, who was born in Nottingham in 1918, He came back from overseas and died of TB in 1941. He may have been in Norway with the Sherwood Foresters, but Im guessing. If anyone has any information I would love to hear from you.
" " (d. )
I have a wedding picture of my cousin and her groom. We know nothing about him. His uniform has been identified by a couple of veterans in England as being 23rd armoured Brigade, by the Liver Bird patch. Hope that someone will recognize him. The picture is about 3x6. Bride is Eva Dottel {birth surname.} Hope someone can shed some light on this search.
Nurse Mary Alice "Mae" Loughran
My aunt, Mary Alice Loughran, left Northern Ireland between 1936 and 1939 and is suspected of going to help in the Spanish civil war. We know she was in St James Hospital and Whipps cross hospital in London in the early fortees. She lived or worked in Walthamstow. Mary Alice went England with her sister Margaret Loughran.
I found a letter from aunt Mary Alice recently which she wrote during Hitler's advance in Europe and she said she was considering marriage to a Doctor in her hospital, but equally fancied a RAF man in a military hospital she was being seconded to. The family say a telegram came from the war office to say she was missing, presumed dead. This was after she wrote to say she was returning to Carricklane house, Armagh. But she never turned up.
In the eightees I found what looked like an older photo behind an old press and took them to NI Forensic dept. I got a call to say they thought they had info but before I got there the dept was blown up by the IRA. Later an army officer rang to say he had info that she may have been in wrac and to make contact. But the details were lost in vandalism in house. The search is on again now and we have a search firm looking for records. All her siblings died this year except my mum who is 86 years and we would like to draw closure. The Red Cross 15 yrs ago said they had no record of my aunt and the Salvation army drew a blank. I have one photo of her in uniform with a broad white head dress and small cross and trailing v shaped head dress and white dress and red cross. blue/grey shirt. It would be so great to get details of her resting place or any other next of kin. It was always thought she died in the blitz or on a boat to Belfast. I hope there is someone somewhere who has a memory of her. Her disapperance was a heart break and has blighted my life also as I can find no closure to my aunt's whereabouts.
Cyril Wray
Cyril was demobbed in 1948/9. He was a member of the Remelins Dance Band whilst in Egypt. We lost touch after 1948/9 and I would be grateful for any information.
Capt. H. H. "Sam" Hodgkins HQ 15 Ind. Corps Leicestershire Regt
Looking for a friend who helped liberate my Mother, Sister and Grandmother from the Japanese Concentrations camps in Indonesia after WW2
Rfm. Pledger The Cameronians
My father, Gnr. Andrew Gray, 58th. Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, picked up a small discarded soldier's bible on the beach at Dunkirk, during the evacuaion. Written in the rear page is the inscription, "Rfl. (S. or L.) Pledger, 3244693." If this soldier's relatives contact me, I will be happy to return the bible to them.
Lt Col. Garvie O Barker
I am the daughter of Col. Garvie Barker, writing a memoir of growing up during WWII. In 1946 we (mom, me, sister) went to the Philippines where our soldier was stationed. We returned in late January, early Feb of 1947 on the USS General David C. Shanks troopship, along with a boatload of returning military personnel. I am trying to locate any person on that voyage who was an adult. My mom, sister & dad are all deceased, and I need some details for my book. Thank any & all of you. You may contact me through this site
William Letts HMS Vulture
I am a writer trying to find out about HMS Vulture during the years 1942-52 for a book I am writing. The person in question is now deceased, Bill Letts, who was based there during these years. I thought Vulture was a ship but find it is a naval airbase. Does this mean he couldn't have sailed on a ship called this? (I know there was an SS Vulture that sailed, but that was before these dates and he was on HMS not SS.) If anyone can help me understand a bit more about this, I would be most grateful. Also, does anyone know of a naval school at nearby Newquay for the children of naval personnel during this time and later? Any help would be most welcome.
Svenn Svennson SS Skallagrimur
My husband & I have recently returned from a holiday staying with friends in Iceland. Whilst there, our host, Gudmundur, told us that his grandfather Svenn Svennson was the skipper of an Icelandic trawler who had received a British award for gallantry during WW2.(We think that this must have been the British Empire Medal for Gallantry, although the medal has now been lost.) The act of gallantry involved the rescue of over 300 men from a British boat sunk by a U-boat. Gudmundur showed us a silver cigarette case made by Mappin & Webb which is inscribed with the following words: "From the ships company of HMS Forfar to the crew of SS Skallagrimur in recognition of a gallant deed 15.6.40" Since returning to the UK we have researched HMS Forfar & the SS Skallagrimur on the web. Surprisingly, we have found that HMS Forfar was not the boat involved in the rescue by the Skallagrimur. Instead, the boat involved was HMS Andania. This was sunk by U-boat UA in the early hours of 16th June (not 15th as in the inscription on the cigarette case)in the North Atlantic off the Faroe Islands. All members of the crew of HMS Andania (300+) were rescued and taken on board by the Skallagrimur which must have been seriously overloaded as a result. The Skallagrimur was on its way to Hull with its catch of fish. Gudmundur would like to find out more about this act of bravery as his father, who was a boy of 10 at the time of the rescue, is still alive and can remember his father's award. So, can anyone throw any further light on this? Why did the ship's company of HMS Forfar present a cigarette case to the Icelandic skipper and crew? Were some members of the rescued crew of the Andania transferred to service on HMS Forfar? Was it something that the crew of the Forfar heard about (the ships were involved in the same mission in the North Atlantic)and wanted to recognise? Is there another explanation? Any further information would be gratefully received and will be passed on to Gudmundur and his family.
Gdsm. Reginald Charles Herbert "Bunnie" Bunn 1st Battalion (d.13th May 1940)
My older brother Reginald was killed at Dunkirk in 1940. I am now in Australia and have a few letters that Reginald wrote whilst in training and with BEF. I have no photos of my brother, the only one I have is when he was 12! Would it be posible to trace any squad pitures when he was in Caterham, Pirbright or No 1 Infantry base Depot BEF? I would love these and would be willing to pay for the time spent and cost, can anyone help?
Captain W Driscoll (d.18th Oct 1944)
I am undertaking research on a memorial to the 24 American Service men who died in a B24 crash over Prenton, Wirral on 18 October 1944. I have a full list of their names and have pictures of the memorial if you wish to have them. I am a former Royal Marine, who now looks after the main war memorials on the Wirral. I would like to know the history of the flight and any other information you may give me. I believe the owner of the small parcel of land has tried to contact the USAAF for information of the flight but has been unsuccessful to date. He has contacted me as a member of Wirral Borough Council to see if I would be able to assist him. We are keen to have these men remembered. I have just listed the captain as a starting reference. If you have any information I would be most interested.
Cpl. James Smith
I am trying for years to find James Smith, who was my father. My mother met him while he was stationed at the US Army Rehab Unit, Stoneliegh Park, Warwickshire,England. They both loved dancing to the music of Glen Miller. My mother said he was from Oregon, but maybe not, she was not good at names.
I don't wish to cause a problem but I would love to know if he survived. He certainly left me with an inbuilt love of American things, sports, music etc. He may have been demoted to private after my birth. He had shrapnel wounds from which he was recovering.
There was a site about the hospital on the net at one time but I can't find it now. I only know the doctor who set it up was ahead of his field. Oh, yes, my father's O/C was apparently Capt Wages but this may have been a command title.
Any info gratefully received in complete confidence.
