Pte. Olafur Grimolfson Seaforth Highlanders of Canada

Olafur Grimolfson was born 6th of January 1921 at Hecla Island, MB. Oli enlisted in the Canadian Army, on 12th of June 1944 and served with the Seaforth Highlanders in Canada, England, Holland and Germany. He received his discharge on 8th of July 1946.

Pte. William Ferguson Evans 6th Btn. Canadian Seaforth Highlanders

My dad, William Evans, served with the Canadian Seaforth Highlanders (he signed up in Vernon British Columbia) and ranked as Private. He initially trained in Vernon BC, then went to Prince Rupert and spent some training time in Prince George. (I'm trying to find out more about his service.) He was on the front lines as a communications/radio operator. He said he relied on other soldiers to tell him when the shelling started as he couldn't hear it. Most of his time was in Italy.

According to his brother, he went on a boat to England then through the Mediterranean to North Africa. Another ship took him to Palermo. To quote his brother, "He then, I presume, walked up the length of Italy to Leghorn to Marseille, up France to Belgium and then to liberate Holland and up to Germany". At the end of the war, they arrived to Vancouver BC by train and walked from the train station in Vancouver over the Burrard Street Bridge to the Vancouver BC Seaforth Highlanders building.

According to his Discharge Certificate, he was enrolled in the No. XI District Depot.

He wouldn't talk about his service for about 30 years due to what he'd seen. However, he had no regrets and was proud to have served Canada.

Joyce Evans

Cpl. Donald Joseph Tompson Seaforth Highlanders of Canada

Donald Tompson was my dad. He first tried enlisting when he was 17 but was turned down. Then when he was 18 he tried again but was not taken because he had scarlet fever as kid. At 19 in 1943 he was accepted when the push was on and men were needed badly. Dad served overseas in Ortona then on to Holland. He was promoted to corporal not long after landing in Italy. I never knew my father, I was 6 years old when he died of polio in 1958. Seems like a sad ending for someone who gave so much when so young.

Robert Tompson

Pte. Ernest Edward Fox Seaforth Highlanders of Canada

My Dad Ernest Fox was very proud to serve with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. He was very young when he joined up. He served in Italy where he lost both legs and suffered lacerations to face, hands and thighs. Dad was a platoon runner and was hit by a mortar shell. Dad never talked about what he went through and it never stopped him from doing anything.
