Cyril Robert Henry Allen 2740 Squadron RAF Regiment

Cyril Allen in 1943

Cyril's wedding 27th Nov 1943

Cyril (my father) joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve on 3 April 1941 and served with 740 Squadron RAF Regiment at RAF Morton-in-Marsh, which became 2740 Squadron on 1 February 1942 and moved to RAF Gravesend. It became the AA Squadron on 17 May 1943 and moved to RAF Keevil on 17 March 1944. Then it moved to St. Omer in France in February 1945. By April, the unit was in Germany and, by May, in Denmark. It was disbanded in September 1946. He married Joyce Edna Robinson (WAAF 2143543 27) in November 1943 at Plumstead. My father was discharged on 15 August 1946. After discharge, he returned to his home town of Poole, Dorset and continued with his pre-war employment, where he remained until retirement. He died at Poole Hospital on 16 Feb 1998. He was a member of the RAF Regiment Association from discharge to death.

Sam Ward served with the RAF Regiment.

Cpl. George A. Laycock (d.1940)

I did not know my Grandad, George Laycock. He died in WW2, as I was told by my mother, in 1940 the year my mum was born. His last three numbers are 490 as mine are except I am an Ex Welsh Guardsman. I am aware that he is not listed under the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but may have been buried by my Nan, as many families have done this.

Mike Griffiths

Eric Victor Sanders

Although unsure.. it is a process of elimination.. I am pretty certain that my dad Eric Sanders would have been on this carrier late 1945 during a passage to Singapore and on to Hong Kong. Whilst on board he got called to the office of Group Captain Edward John Corbally who had read my dad's pre-war records of serving as a silver service waiter in a top London Hotel and the Holborn Restaurant. Group Captain Corbally appointed Eric as his valet.

Group Captain Corbally was the commander in charge of the post liberation of Hong Kong ( from my dad's now vague recollection ) If anybody reading this could verify it. it would be useful.

Martin Sanders

AC1. Gordon Howard Anti-Aircraft Flight

Gordon Howard enlisted in January 1942 aged 19. He was not selected for aircrew training at that time but told to reapply in four months and in the meantime placed in the reserves. In August 1942 he was posted to 1 Regiment School, and in the following month posted to the Anti-Aircraft Flight at RAF Hawkinge. In October he was sent to RAF Ronaldsway for two weeks ground to air gunnery training at the Ground Defence Gunnery School. Gordon returned to Hawkinge at the end of that month but in March 1943 was admitted to Canterbury Municipal Hospital, and discharged as "Physically unfit for Air Force Service in May 1943" with a gratuity of 11s 3d a week.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
