P/O. Austin Victor James Bettridge No. 233 Squadron (d.1st Nov 1942)

Austin Bettridge was shot down on 1st of November 1942 near Malta and never found.

Flt.Lt. James Walter Potter DFM. 233 Squadron (d.17th February 1942)

James Potter was awarded the DFM, his citation reads,

Sergeant Potter has completed 110 operational flights including attacks on enemy destroyers, successful reconnaissances off the Dutch coast and an attack with 250lb bombs on Stavanger aerodrome. On 16th of February 1940, he took part in a special search for the Altmark, the next day, he escorted five destroyers bringing rescued prisoners from Norway to Scotland. On 23rd of July 1940, during a North Sea patrol, he sighted an enemy force of eight destroyers and six motor vessels. He reported and shadowed them for two and a half hours to the full endurance of his aircraft despite the presence of enemy aircraft. He has displayed great courage and determination.

LAC. Arthur Wilfreid Smith 233 Squadron (d.7th January 1940)

233 Squadron at Leuchars

Arthur Smith joined the RAF in 1936 and was posted to 233 Squadron on its formation at Tangmere in 1937. He was a Wireless Operator Air Gunner. Initially he trained on Avro Anson's for the Norwegian Patrol. In 1939 he twice took part in the ferrying of Bristol Blenheim light bombers to RAF Habaniyya in Iraq, returning to the UK the day before war broke out.

On 7th of January 1940 aged 20 years whilst testing Anti Surface Vessel radar he was killed when Lockheed Hudson N7256 crashed on Nanty Moel, Bridgend Glamorgan along with Sergeant Pilots Hallam and Bousefield and 2 civilian scientists. Cause of the accident was bad weather.

Wing Co. Hubert Mortimer Styles DSO. 233 Squadron (d.1st Nov 1942)

British Commander in R.C.A.F. Honored. Acting Wing-Cmdr Hubert Mortimer Styles, English born commander of the R.C.A.F coastal command squadron, which has since September destroyed or damaged many thousands of tons of enemy shipping, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order, it was announced on Wednesday night. Styles, whose men want him to remain as their commander even when the squadron otherwise becomes 100 percent Canadian, displayed rare powers of leadership and organizing ability, the citation reads.

"On 1 November 1942 W/Cdr Styles was the pilot of Hudson IIIA FH343 of 233 Squadron Coastal Command. This aircraft took off from Portreath, Cornwall on a delivery flight to RAF Station Gibraltar, where the rest of the squadron was based. His aircraft was seen to spin into the sea in position 4158 N 0939 W and disappear immediately at 1108hrs. Other aircraft circled and observed wreckage, but no sign of life." The crew included Sergeant W. Thirde RCAF, the wireless operator.
