World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

No. 168 Squadron Royal Air Force

No.168 Squadron was formed at RAF Snailwell on 15th June 1942 as a tactical reconnaissance unit in Army Co-operation Command. The squadron was built around a nucleus from No.268 Squadron and was originally equipped with the Curtiss Tomahawk, but before it became operational these were replaced with Mustangs.

The Squadron carried out a mixture of photo reconnaissance and fighter duties, attacking shipping and coastal targets, but spending much of its time training with the army. In the run up to D-Day it was used extensively to locate and photograph strategic German installations in Northern France. Three weeks after D-Day it moved to a beachhead airbase in France and then moved across France and into Belgium and the Netherlands continuing both in reconnaisssance and ground attack functions under army direction.

In October 1944 it replaced the Mustangs with Hawker Typhoons armed with rockets and bombs, and its role changed to offensive operations. The squadron operated in the ground-attack role ahead of the advancing troops. The Squadron was disbanded at Eindhoven in February 1945.
