World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

No. 167 Squadron Royal Air Force

No. 167 Squadron of the RAF was first formed on 18st November 1918 just after the Armistice of the First World War at RAF Bircham Newton as a heavy bomber squadron in No. 27 Group RAF with Handley Page V/1500 four-engined planes. The RAF decided to adopt the Vickers Vimy as the long-distance bomber and disposed of the Handley Page bombers. No.167 squadron was disbanded on 31st May 1919.

The Squadron was reformed on 6th April 1942 as a fighter squadron equipped with Spitfires at Scorton, Yorkshire. After a spell providing air defence over Scapa Flow, it moved to East Anglia and began offensive sorties over occupied Europe. During this period many Dutch airmen who had escaped the German occuipation of their country were allocated to No 167 Squadron and in 1943 it was decided to create a Dutch fighter unit. This was achieved on the 12th June 1943 when No 167 was re-numbered as No 322 (Dutch) Squadron.

167 squadron was reformed again on the 21st October 1944 as a transport squadron based at Holmsley South. The squadron received the Vickers Warwick and was used to ferry personnal and supplies to and from Allied bases in France, the Low Countries and, eventually, Germany.
