World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
No. 63 Squadron RAF
No. 63 Squadron, RFC, was formed at Stirling, Scotland in 1916, serving in Mesopotamia from August 1917, playing a prominent part in the air operations against the Turkish Army. The squadron was disbanded in 1920
No. 63 re-formed at Andover as a bomber squadron in February 1937, and in May 1937, was the first to receive the Fairey Battle. In 1939, it was detailed for aircrew training duties with Anson aircraft. Following the outbreak of WWII it served as an elementary flying training unit at Benson and in April 1940, lost its separate identity and became part of No. 12 OTU.
On 15 June 1942, a detachment of No. 239 Squadron became No. 63 Squadron at Gatwick, flying its first operations with Mustangs from Odiham on 11 January 1943. The squadron spent much of its time cooperating with either the Army, taking part in training exercises, or with the Navy, providing spotter aircraft for the naval bombardment on D-Day and during the Walcheren landings. The squadron also performed some tactical reconnaissance. In January 1944 No. 63 moved to Scotland, re-equipped with Hurricanes before converting to Spitfires in May. The Squadron then handed over its aircraft to No. 41 OTU and disbanded on 30 January 1945.
