World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII
No. 521 Squadron
No 521 was formed from No 1401 Flight at Bircham Newton on 1st August 1942. It conducted meteorological duites over the North Sea and Europe using Hudsons and Blenheims over the North Sea and Spitfires and Mosquitoes over Europe. It used Gladiators for weather flights, measuring temperature and humidity from 40,000 ft down. On 31st March 1943 the squadron was divided into No 1401 and No 1409 (Met) Flights. No 521 re-formed on 1st September 1943 at Docking, flying Hampdens, Hudsons, Gladiators, Venturas and Hurricanes. By the end of the war No 521 was flying only Fortresses. No 521 disbanded in Devon on 1st April 1946.
Airfields No. 521 Squadron flew from:
- RAF Bircham Newton, Norfolk from 1st August 1942 (Blenheim IV, Spitfire V, Hudons III, Hudson V, Spitfire Va, Spitfire Vb, Mosquito IV, Gladiator II. disbanded the 31st of March 1943)
- RAF Docking, Norfolk from 1st September 1943 (re-formed. Hudson III, Hampden I, Gladiator II, Spitfire IX, Ventura V, Hurricane IIc)
- RAF Langham, Norfolk from 30th October 1944 (Fortress II)
