No. 3 Squadron



No. 3 Squadron (Royal Flying Corps) was formed at Larkhill on the 13th of May 1912 from No. 2 Company of the Air Battalion Royal Engineers. No. 3 Squadron was in France for World War I, first as reconnaissance using a variety of aircraft types and later, with Sopwith Camels, as fighter/scouts.

In 1935, No. 3 was deployed to the Sudan during the Italian invasion of Abyssinia.

World War II began with No. 3 Squadron in Scotland, with the Hawker Hurricane, as part of Fighter Command. The squadron took part in the Battle of Britain, and later, equipped with Tempests, it shot down several hundred German V1 flying bombs over England.

  • RAF Castletown, Caithness from 3rd September 1940
  • RAF Skeabrae, Orkney from 7th January 1941
  • RAF Castletown, Caithness from 10th February 1941
  • RAF Martlesham Heath, Suffolk from 3rd April 1941
  • RAF Stapleford Tawney, Essex from 23rd June 1941
  • RAF Hunsdon, Hertfordshire from 9th August 1941
  • RAF West Malling, Kent from 14th May 1943
  • RAF Manston, Kent from 11th June 1943
  • RAF Swanton Morley, Norfolk from 28th December 1943
  • RAF Manston, Kent from 14th February 1943
  • RAF Bradwell Bay, Essex from 6th March 1944
  • RAF Newchurch, Kent from 28th April 1944
  • RAF Matlaske, Norfolk from 21st September 1944
  • Grimbergen B60 from 28th September 1944
