No. 311 Squadron



No 311 Squadron was formed at Honington on the 29th of July 1940 from members of the Czech Air Force who had been serving in France and who had escaped to Britain when France fell. It started is a bomber squadron with Wellingtons, part of No 3 Group until April 1942 when it was transferred to Coastal Command. Flying a general reconnaissance role, it also took part in the third raid on Bremen. In June 1945 No 311 Squadron transferred to Transport Command, flying between Britain and Czechoslovakia. From August 1945 it flew from Prague. It was disbanded in February 1946.

Airfields No. 311 Squadron flew from:
  • RAF Honington, Suffolk from the 29th July 1940 (formed, Wellington Ia, Wellington Ic. Bomber Command)
  • RAF East Wretham, Norfolk from the 16th September 1940
  • RAF Aldergrove, County Antrim from the 30th April 1942 (to Coastal Command, Wellington Ic)
  • RAF Talbenny, Pembrokeshire, from the 12th of June 1942
  • RAF Beaulieu, Hampshire, from the 26th of May 1943 (Liberator V)
  • RAF Predannack, Cornwall, from the 23rd of February 1944 (Liberator VI)
  • RAF Tain from the 7th August 1944
  • RAF Milltown, Cumbria from the 25th June 1945
  • RAF Manston from the 6th August 1945
  • Prague from the 21st August 1945
  • disbanded the 15th February 1946
