No. 17 Squadron
No. 17 Squadron was a fighter squadron flying Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain. In June 1940 they were breifly based in France to assist with the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force. In November 1941, the squadron sailed for the Far East but were diverted to Burma arriving in January 1942, as Japanese troops neared Rangoon. They served in Burma and India until August 1943 when they moved to Ceylon and were equiped with Spitfires. In March 1944 they moved back to India. In June 1945 the squadron was withdrawn to prepare for the invasion of Malaya and was taken by carrier to the landing beaches near Penang in early September soon after the Japanese capitulation. The squadron remained in Japan until it was disbanded on the 23th of February 1948.
