5th Battalion, Essex Regiment



   5th Battalion, Essex Regiment was a territorial unit based in Chelmsford, part of 161st Infantry Brigade, 54th (East Anglian) Infantry Division. They later transferred to 19th Indian Brigade, 8th Indian Division, then to 13th Brigade, 5th Division and saw action in The Middle East, North Africa, Italy and North Western Europe.

Pte. John Samuel Denton 5th Btn. Essex Regiment (d.5th January 1944)

John Denton served with the 5th Battalion, Essex Regiment in WW2. He had been posted to join the ongoing battle at Sanro River just 5 days before he was killed there on 5th of January 1944 age 23 years. He is buried at Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy. Son of Walter and Alice Denton of Batley, Yorkshire.

Lt. Gerald Athenry Whyte 5th Btn. Essex Regiment (d.2nd Nov 1943)

From the newspaper: "Whyte, - In Nov., 1943, killed in action, Gerald Athenry Whyte, W./Lt., The Essex Regiment, the dearly loved younger son of Major and Mrs. Charles Whyte, 54, East Sheen Avenue, S.W.14, aged 22 years 5 months."

Andrew Allan Lennox 5th Btn. Essex Regiment (d.22nd Dec 1943)

Andrew Lennox was a member of our family and fought against the Germans in Torino di Sangro in Italy where he was killed. He was buried at the Sangro River War Cemetery.

Recently I received this photograph of my father, Alan Lavers, Captain with the Essex Regiment. On the reverse of the picture are the words, Desert Rat, July 1942.

Sgt. Donald E. Blackwell 5th Btn. Essex Regiment (d.15th Apr 1944)

Donald Blackwell was my grandfather's brother. He is buried in the regimental cemetery in Bari.
