4th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders (Queens Own)
The 4th Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders were part of 152nd Infantry Brigade of the 51st (Highland) Division with the BEF early in the war. The 4ths were part of the two brigades who covered the British and French withdrawal to Dunkirk and were captured in France in June 1940.
The 4th Battalion was reconstituted in Inverness in July 1940, and departed to garrison the Dutch West Indies. In march 1942 they were The Battalion was then assigned to 46th (Highland) Brigade of the 15th (Scottish) Division, as replacements for the 7th Battalion. In November 1942, they were posted to the 228th Independent Infantry Brigade, part of the Orkney & Shetland Defences (OSDEF). In December 1942 after 2nd Battalion had been lost at Tobruk, the 4ths were disbanded and reformed as the 2nd Battalion.
On the 20 December 1942 the 4th Battalion The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (228th Independent Infantry Brigade, Orkney & Shetland Defenses) were disbanded and reformed the 2nd Battalion. In January 1944 they were assigned to the 11th Indian Infantry Brigade, 4th Indian Infantry and departed for Taranto, Italy. They took part in the lengthy campaigns in Italy until November 1944 when they were then sent to Greece. In July 1945 they were flown to Austria as part of 61st Infantry Brigade, 6th Armoured Division for occupation duties returning to Britain at the end of August 1945.

Cpl. Donald Sutherland Sinclair 4th Battalion Queens Own Cameron Highlanders Donnie Sinclair served with 4th Cameron Highlanders and was held in Stalag XXB.

Pte. Stewart Anderson 4th Battalion Cameron Highlanders We think Stewart Anderson was captured at Forges between the 5th and 8th of June 1940.
According to one of his sisters who used to write to him through the Red Cross, she got occasional replies.
We believe he attempted to escape at least twice with fellow POWs. The 2nd time they reached inside Russia and had killed a coo and were ready to feast when caught and warned if they tried to escape they would be shot. We have no idea if that put an end to escapes etc.
Allegedly, his captors weren't as cruel to them, just ordinary working class men, as those who forced march them to eventual freedom. During the Death March to freedom my father was suffering from frost bite and was being carried on a stretcher by fellow POW's and their column was occasionally strafed by aircraft (probably friendly) and he received shrapnel wounds which he still had up until he died in 1958.
He had nightmares on occasion that we all were aware off right up until he died. However, he was a proud and smart soldier and indeed remained a reserve until the end.

Pte. Hector MacInnes MID. 4th Battalion Cameron Highlanders Hector MacInnes received a Mention in Despatches for actions in Malaya.

Pte. John Hill 4th Btn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (d.10th May 1941) Private Hill was the Son of Charles Ormond Hill and Jemima Hill, of Nairn. His brother, Charles, also died on service.
He was 22 and is buried in the Cervera Cemetery in Spain.

Pte. Charles Hill 4th Btn Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (d.24th May 1941) Private Hill was the Son of Charles Ormond Hill and Jemima Hill, of Nairn. His brother, John, also died on service.
He was 26 and is buried in the Barcelona (Montjuich) Cemetery in Spain.

Cpl. James Walker 4th Btn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (d.29th September 1940) Corporal James Walker was the Son of James and Margaret Walker, of Whitburn, Lothian. Sgt. Harold Agnew 4th Btn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (d.26th January 1942) Serjeant Agnew was the Son of James and Florence Agnew; husband of Mary Agnew, of Oldham, Gtr. Manchester.
He was 32 when he died and is buried in the Oranjestad Protestant Cemetery, Island of Aruba.

Pte. Robert Wilson 4th Btn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (d.3rd October 1940) Private Wilson was 29 when he died and is buried in the Savaneta Roman Catholic Cemetery, Island of Aruba.

Captain Derek Lang 4th Btn. Queens Own Cameron Highlanders Derek Lang of 4th Battalion, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders was captured in June 1940 and held as a prisoner of war.

Pte. Ronald Kennedy 4th Btn. Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders (d.7th May 1942) Ronald Kennedy was 35 when he died and he is buried in the Calvary (Prospect) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bermuda.
