Fus. Elias Gwynedd Hughes 6th Btn. Royal Welch Fusiliers (d.10th November 1944)

Elias Hughes, known as Gwyn, was my late Father's brother and died aged 23 just before I was born. He left a wife Joyce Marion Hughes and a baby son Graham who was born in 1943. I have a photo of a young man but no name to know who it is and sadly my Father and Mother passed away many years ago so I have no one to ask now. The resemblance to my Father's side of the family is uncanny and I think that it must be Gwyn.

The Deganwy History Group ( Gwyn was born in Deganwy) has a Roll of Honour for all those service people who died in WW 2 and each November a Poppy is placed on the door where the person was born. I would like to add a photo to their list but until I can confirm definitely that the photo is of Gwyn then I cannot contribute it to their list. So the search goes on and hopefully I may find out sometime.

Brian Hughes

Flr. Norman George Groombridge 6th Btn. Royal Welch Fusiliers

Father in Law, Norman Groombridge, now deceased, never spoke about his war time service except when I mentioned we visited Belson POW camp. He had terrible time then. I know that he was injured on 1st of November 1944, still trying to get into that so if anyone knows what action took place from July to November 1944 would be grateful.

Hugh Gwilliams

Fus. Leuan Evans 6th Btn. Royal Welch Fusiliers (d.17th July 1944)

Ieuan Evans was my Grandfather, but my Father did not know this man was his father until he was 70 years old. I am desperate for any more details if anyone has any. My Father is 80 now and knows hardly anything about Ieuan. How would I find out where he is buried etc?

Evan Emlyn Hughes 6th Btn. Royal Welch Fusiliers

My dad, Evan Hughes, served with the 6th Btn. Royal Welch Fusiliers. Does anyone remember him?

J Nimmon 6th Btn Welsh Fusiliers

Fusilier J Nimmon, 1500958, served in the 6th Btn of the Welsh Fusiliers and was a PoW in Stallag 11b.

Cpl. John Walter Wood 6th Btn Royal Welsh Fusiliers

J Wood

My father John Wood enlisted on 14th October 1940 aged 18 at Northampton and after being in several battalion stayed in the 6th Royal Welsh Fusiliers in C Company. He was posted to North West Europe on the 24th of June1944 and landed 25th of June 1944. He was captured with others on the 25th Sept 1944 during an attack and counter attack by the Germans at Reusel with other fusiliers Holdcroft (4206239), W Owens and Whitehead after being ordered to assist the stretcher bearers as there was to many wounded. They were captured whilst evacuating a wounded soldier on a stretcher. He spoke very little of his time in the war but was very proud to be a Welsh Fusilier. Attached is a note to his mother written on the back of a photo from Stalag11B (POW No 1583) dated 22nd of October 1944. I am not sure what happened to him between 25th of Septmber 1944 and 22nd of October 1944.but he did mention some long marches and little food. He was repatriated through Stalag 9 I believe. On his return to England, he was transferred to the R.A.S.C. but my mother told me as he was no longer a Royal Welsh Fusilier he wished to return to civilian life.
