Pte. Walter Blackett 2nd Btn. South Wales Borderers (d.8th June 1944)

Walter Blackett served with the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers in WW2. He was killed at Sully Chateau on the 8th of June 1944 aged 19 years. According to his mate, Bill Evans, Walter was executed with ten of his comrades on the lawn in front of the Chateau. He is buried Bayeaux War Cemetery in France. Son of Mrs E. Blackett of Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.

Thelma Orrick

Pte Thomas Neil Moss 2nd Btn. South Wales Borderers

Tommy Moss, drummer, boxer, singer and a great soldier and comrade served pre war served in Palestine, Northern Ireland and during the war in Norway, North Africa, Italy. So many stories of laughs, starting a choir, riding back to barracks on a borrowed donkey, getting a lift in the CO's car, being starving and foraging for food, acquiring cigarettes and alcohol on night raids. Remembered by comrades as the one who kept them going and playing a mandolin whilst bombs were dropping to calm younger soldiers. A plucky and daring soldier who never got the bravery medal promised on Anzio beachhead.

Tommy was born and bred in the Valleys which made him the tough character he was but also the gentle and caring soldier ready to help others in need. Granddaughter Alison Allen has written an account of his war, comrades, the friends lost and the years after as a special grandfather.

Alison Allen

Pte. Ronald Jonas "Digger" Leach 2nd Btn. South Wales Borderers

My father Ronald Leach told us that he was a POW and I have now found a scanty record. We also believe he was in India at the Khyber Pass. He was a trumpet player in the band. We were also told that he was in Yugoslavia at sometime during the war.

Does anyone have any information about the South Wales Borderer's actions? We think he may have been in the second battalion as we have read another memory which states they were at the Khyber Pass. He was later in Stalag 4b in 1942. Was he captured at Tobruk?

Stephen Leach

Willie John 2nd Btn., Carrier Platoon, H. Q. Co. South Wales Borderers

In a letter postmarked 30 Dec 1939, Willie John wrote from Bernard Castle, Co. Durham, to Christine C. A. Savery, who was a volunteer with the Sandes Soldier's and Airmen's Homes throughout World War II and after. The letter was addressed to Miss Savery c/o Sandes Soldier's Home, Waterside, L'Derry, N. Ireland.

The letter thanked Savery for toffees she sent by an unnamed messenger from soldiers identifying themselves as the "Everlasting Life Squad" and expressed appreciation for Savery's Bible classes at the Sandes Home.

Other members of the "Everlasting Life Squad" are not identified.

Savery died, aged 95, at the Resthaven Nursing Home near Stroud on 22 September 1997. She was awarded the M.B.E. in 1953.

CSM. Frank Charles Ricketts 2nd Btn. South Wales Borderers

My Late Father Frank Ricketts was educated at the Duke of York military school at Dover and then went straight into the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers. At the outbreak of WW2 he was serving in the Khyber Pass. In June 1942 the Battalion was sent to Egypt where he was captured and sent to Sulmona camp 78. Unfortunately when the Italians deserted the camp and the POW's went into the Mountains my Father was recaptured and then sent into Germany to Stalag 11A where he remained for the duration of the War. At the end of the War he returned to Germany as part of the occupation forces. My Father suffered recurring nightmares of his experiences right up until his death in 1977
