There are:1355 items tagged 1st Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers available in our Library

These include information on officers, regimental histories, letters, diary entries, personal accounts and information about actions during the Second World War.

Fus. John McConnel "Jock" McGarvey 1st Btn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (d.10th Jan 1943)

John McGarvey joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, although had been caught by police three times for deserting. His last place of arrest was in London. After several fines, they had enough and he was sent to prison, although within two weeks he was sent out with his regiment to Burma.

My understanding of his death was that he and another soldier were in a tank when a grenade of some sort was thrown in killing John but the other man survived to tell this story. To my knowledge it was a soldier he knew from a town close to the village where he lived.

Natasha McAuley

Fus. Albert Ernest "Boy" Nobbs 1st Btn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (d.17th Feb 1944)

Albert Nobbs was age 20 when he was killed in combat attempting to take Monte Casino. His family lived in West Ham, London.

SSgt. Alfred James "Tom" Hennah 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers

My father, Alfred Hennah was born in Walthamstow on 20th of January 1914. At the age of sixteen he enlisted, joining the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Inniskilling. His brother Walter was already serving in the Battalion.

They were stationed in Wellington Barracks in India when the Japanese attacked Burma. Military dependents including his wife (my mother) and baby son were sent to England by convoy ship. The Battalion was sent into Burma taking part in the first and second Burma campaign.

My father was reluctant to talk about these times but frequently spoke about the loss of mates. His best friends, brothers George and Albert Young who died within a day of each other.

My father completed twenty eight years in the Army, the last nine years with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He passed away in 1994.

Fslr. James McCandless 1st Btn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (d.21st April 1942)

James McCandless was 22 when he went missing in Burma. His parents were informed in October 1942 that their son was 'missing' - final notification of his death was given to them in November 1944. James' younger brother, George, also served in Burma and had died of wounds in March 1944 aged 23.

James Stamper 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusilliers

My Dad, James Stamper joined the Royal Inneskillins in 1944 and was posted to India. I am trying to find information about that time as sadly we never wrote down his memories. Dad died in 2008. Can anyone help fill in the gaps?
