Gdsmn. George Doleman 3rd Btn. Grenadier Guards

George Doleman enlisted on 6th of December 1939 at the age of 20. He trained at Chelsea Barracks before transfer to the Holding Company at Windsor. Then to 3rd Battalion in London.

He moved to North Africa in November 1942 for Operation Torch and tTook part in North Africa campaign and Tunisia Campaign. There were significant battles in the Medjez-el-Bab and along Mareth Line.

He Moved with 3rd battalion to Italy on 1st of March 1943. The Regiment took part in the Italian Campaign at Salerno, Monte Camino, Anzio, Monte Cassino and along the Gothic Line. The Guards battled for Perugia, entered the City and fought beyond the City. Then moved to approaches to Arezzo, captured it then into Arno Valley. This was the beginning of August 1944. He was Posted to the 5th battalion on 1st of March 1945 and returned to the UK, he was posted to Training Battalion Grenadier Guards in May 1945. He was sent to Germany for several months from October 1945 until February 1946. Finally on 9th of March 1946 he was moved to the Military Disembarkation Unit at Strensall followed by the Military Dispersal Unit at York.

Grdsmn. Eric Clarence "Timber" Woods 3rd Btn. Grenadier Guards

Eric Woods, my father, joined the Grenadier Guards when war broke out in September 1939. He was on active service in North Africa, Italy, and Austria. He fought in many campaigns, including Monte Cassino, was wounded by machine-gun fire crossing the river Po, but saw the war out and was honourably discharged in Scotland near Hawick in 1946. Unfortunately, I don't have much else to tell.

Dennis Duggan 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards

My grandad Dennis Duggan sailed on the SS Stratheden when he went to North Africa in November 1942. He was in the first Army, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. He said that whilst on board he went and had a bath in one of the first class cabins, fortunately he wasn’t caught doing so!

Pte. Walter Thomas Heard 3rd Btn. Grenadier Guards

Wally Heard served with the 3rd Grenadier Guards and was in Sgt Reike's Squad.




Pte. Cyril George Ridgway 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards

Cyril Ridgway enlisted into the Grenadier Guards in November 1939 and was transferred to 3rd Battalion in June 1940 after the fall of France so remained in England. After spending time in hospital at Louth, Lincs, in January 1941, Cyril was soon transferred into the RAMC, and served in J Company 1st Depot, Crookham, Hants from 15th of Feb 1941.

W/Sgt. Edward Prescott 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards

Ted Prescott joined the Manchester Regiment territorials in 1935 and transferred to the Grenadier Guards in 1936. He was sent to France to serve with B.E.F on the 19th of September 1939 and was evacuated from Dunkirk on the 2nd of June 1940. He then served in North Africa with the 6th Armoured Division and later was in Italy and involved in Battle for Cassino. He was injured on the way to Rome when he was hit by an American truck hospitalised in Rome. His Regiment moved on and Ted was left behind. He was seconded to South African Armoured Regiment as p.t.i until graded b2 by the medical officer He returned home to serve as Sergent of the Guard at Windsor Castle until discharged on the 2nd of April 1946.

L/Sgt. Albert Edward Steele 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards

Albert Edward Steele, known as Ted enlisted in the 3rd Battalion, the Grenadier Guards on the 7th of August 1943 at Derby. He was 17 years and 11 months. Ted was sent to Caterham Barracks in Surrey for his training and whilst in the South, he met his future wife. His first deployment was on the 3rd of November 1944 in Italy and he remained there until the 2nd of August 1945. By that time his regiment had reached Austria.

After the war ended, his battalion was dispatched to Palestine from the 11th of October 1945 to the 28th of July 1947. He duly returned to the UK and lived a full and happy life.

Grdsmn. George Edward Tilley 6th Btn. Grenadier Guards

George Tilley joined the 6th after Salerno, fought at Monte Casino and with the 6th until it was disbanded. Survivors transferred to the 5th Grenadiers to bring it up to strength. Fought with them until they too were disbanded and the survivors were transferred to the 3rd Battalion. Did not see any action with the 3rd and returned to the UK to be re-trained to fight the Japanese. Luckily war ended before they were sent overseas.
