World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

RAF Marston Moor

RAF Marston Moor is situated at Tockwith, midway between Harrogate and York, taking its name from the nearby historical battlefield. The Airfield opened in November 1941 as a heavy bomber training school for 4 Group Bomber Command. It was home to 1652 HCU.

Today much of the site remains, the main technical site is now an industrial estate, six T2 hangars remain and are in use, along with several other original buildings. The control tower is the offices of a driving school which uses the runways as a training ground, so continuing a long standing tradition of learning, though closer to the ground than the previous pupils.

My Father William Jones served with 10 Squadron until September 1943 when he was transferred to Marston Moor as head of navigation. Later in the war he appeared to be flying all over the place as navigator but we have little information as to why.
