World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

RAF Wickenby

RAF Wickenby was situated near Langworth in Lincolnshire. During the winter of 1942/43 No. 12 Squadron converted to Lancasters at Wickenby, having arrived from Binbrook. On November 7th 1943, C Flight was expanded to become 626 Squadron On September 24th 1945, 12 Squadron moved back to Binbrook. 12 Squadron suffered the second highest percentage losses in Bomber Command (highest was 57 Squadron) 626 Squadron was disbanded on at Wickenby on October 14th, 1945 The base was later taken over by 93 MU and later 92 MU until base was closed in 1956.

During Wickenby's short active service 1080 lives were lost from the base. This sacrifice is commemorated by a memorial with the form of Icarus on an obelisk at the entrance to the airfield. Today the site is a private airfield used as an aviation school and is home to The RAF Wickenby Memorial Museum.

F/O Jack Pierce Hutchinson DFC 626 Squadron

On 24/25 February 1944 Lancaster ll797 of 626 Squadron from Wickenby was brought down over Marsal France on the way to bomb Schweinfurt. This was to be the 30th operation of their first tour.

The crew were:

  • F/O Jack Pierce Hutchinson DFC RAAF (Pilot)
  • F/O Peter Henry Wilson Young (Air Bomber)
  • P/O Leonard Goodkey RCAF
  • F/S Arthur Hodgson
  • F/S Ken Macey
  • Sgt Bob Edgeworth
  • W/O Hector Binder RCAF
  • and second pilot Sgt Brian Bowditch.

I believe an issue of the Wickenby Register from around 2002 contains a report about this crew. If anybody should have a copy of this, or any information at all about the crew and the circumstances of their crash, I would be very pleased to hear from them.

    Ernest Turgoose 626 Sqd.

My wife's late grandfather, Ernie Turgoose, volunteered and entered the RAF in 1939/40, aged approx 35. He was in Groundcrew throughout WW2, in the UK. I believe he ended the war at Wickenby, I saw his squadron photo taken in front of a Lanc, which I believe was shot there when was he with 626 Squadron. My wife recalls him saying he was also at Honiley (Warwickshire) which is our 'local' airfield. He may also have been at Honeybourne (Worcs). Does anyone remember him or know anything more about his service?

Arthur Lepine Butcher DFC. 12 Squadron

My father, Arthur Lepine Butcher served with 12 Squadron at RAF Wickenby from October 1944 to April 1945. Before that he was a flying instructor. I would like to find out more, can anyone fill in any details?

Flt Sgt Ronald Gerrard Craddock was a W-Op/Air Gunner, on Lancaster ED424, lost April 24th, 1944 returning from mission over Karlsruhe. His wife, my late aunt Vera Craddock nee Davidson was in the Airforce also stationed at Wickenby and was on duty on that night. Their daughter, my cousin Joy was born in November 1944. I am investigating my family history and would be grateful for any info.

W/O. Reginald Paul Rabett DFC. 166 Squadron (d.9th Oct 1943)

My grandfather's brother, W/O Reginald Rabett flew from RAf Wickenby. On th e8th of October 1943 he took off for Ludwigshaven, Germany in a Lancaster BII, marked ED993 of 166 SQ. The aircraft which had been recently mended due to engine trouble, was scheduled for Reg Rabett as the pilot to fly out and bomb his destination. On the way more trouble had occured and there were notes of cabin or engine fire on the way. With determination and great bravery he carried on to the target and succesfully bombed the location. On return with problems on the way, the plane crashed landed. The crash broke off the tail setting the rear gunner free from the craft and a crew man in the centre turret was also thrown free from the Lancaster, both of whom survived. Unfortunatly the remaining crew, W/O Rabett included, all died in the aircraft which broke into fire after the crash landing. Due to his bravery, after the mission, my Great Grandparents recived the DFC medal in honour of their son Reginald Paul Rabett.

The men flying in the Lancaster which crashed during the emergency landing on 9th of October 1943 were: Sgt James O'Reilly (Nav.)1549441, Ronald Davies, (W/T) 1032360 Age: 23, Sgt Ronald Ernest Gratwick (B/A) 1324750 Age: 20 and Trevor Roberts (F/E) 1413356. Sgt E Croxon (M/U) and Sgt L. Davidson (R/G) both survived the landing.

Sgt. Geoffrey Charles Willis 12 Sqdn. (d.15th Oct 1942)

I am still researching about my grandfather, Geoffrey Charles Willis who served with 12 Squadron. On the 15th of October 1942 Wellington III BJ606 PH-S piloted by Sgt. Robert Bayley took off at 18.42 hrs. from RAF Wickenby to join a total of 289 aircraft (1 Wellington, 74 Halifaxes. 62 Lancasters and 44 Stirlings) to bomb Cologne. The aircraft was lost over Limburg, Holland. The crew were:
    • Pilot. Sgt. Robert Bayley 1210044 RAFVR Age 20.
    • Nav. Sgt. Alec Gordon Willans 1381545 RAFVR Age 30.
    • Nav. Sgt. Geoffrey Charles Willis 1023440 RAFVR Age 32.
    • W/Op Air.Gnr. F/Sgt Jack Johannesen AUS/412146 RAAF Age 22.
    • W/Op Air.Gnr.: F/Sgt. John Edward Freese Martin AUS/403060 RAAF age 31.
    • Air/Gnr: F/Sgt. Edmund St. Aubin Richardson R/82608 RCAF Age 31.

I would love to hear from anyone who served in No 12 Squadron, or anyone whose relatives served, to see if there are any logs in their relative's books that refer to my grandfather.

    F/O Alfred Thompson McKay 12 Sqdn. (d.27th April 1944)

In the early morning of April 27th 1944 RAF Lancaster ND 873 12 squadron from Wickenby was shot down by a German nightfighter and crashed about 7 km from my home town in the south of the Netherlands. The seven crew members didn't survive. Their graves are now at Jonkerbos war cemetery in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The crewmembers were:
    • Flying officer McKay, Alfred Thompson 21 years, navigator. Son of Alfred and Margaret Thompson McKay, of Knockando, Morayshire.
    • Sergeant Laybourne, Roy William 21 years, flight engineer. Son of William and Martha Laybourne, of Worsley, Lancashire.
    • Sergeant Shiels, Alexander Kelso 21 years, air gunner. Son of James Lyle Shiels and Catherine Wilson Shiels, of Auchinloch, Lanarkshire.
    • Flying officer Smith, Lawrence Lindsay 21 years, air bomber. Son of the Revd. Lawrence Bradway Smith, B.A., B.D., and of Lillian Frances Smith (nee Casselman), of Westmeath, Ontario, Canada.
    • Sergeant McJannett, Alexander Strathern 21 years, wireless operator. Son of Margaret May McJannett; husband of Freda Joyce McJannett, of Wigston Magna, Leicestershire, from Wigston Magna, Leicestershire.
    • Sergeant Dyerson, Harold Edward 32 years, airgunner. Son of Alfred Dyerson, and of Ada Bell Dyerson, of Plaistow, Essex.
    • Pilot officer Nicholls, George Edwin 32 years, pilot. Son of James Edwin and Evelyn Nicholls, of Heamoor, Penzance, Cornwall; husband of Madeline Nicholls, of Heamoor.

The seven crew members of ND 873 were killed immediately. Their bodies were buried by the German occupying forces at a tempory military cemetery in Venlo (in fact a part of a terrain at the Dr Blumenkampstraat near the hospital of Venlo, claimed by the German army soon after the occupation of the Netherlands in 1940 and initially intended only for their killed soldiers). In August 1947 the bodies of the seven crew members were removed to Jonkerbos War Cemetery in Nijmegen, 50 km north of Venlo.

We, a small group of interested persons, are trying to collect information about this Lancaster and especially his crew. Is there more information about the crew members? Photographs are very welcome. Are there next of kin still alive? They are invited to contact me. Perhaps we have some information or pictures of interest for them.

Sgt. Frederick Anderson 12 Squadron (d.12th June 1943)

My great-uncle Sergeant Frederick Anderson served as a Mid-Upper Gunner with 12 Squadron, Royal Air Force stationed at RAF Wickenby during WWII. Frederick was born in Bournemouth on 21st July, 1920. His serial number was 626653.

He died in the early hours of Saturday 12th June, 1943 aged 22 when Lancaster PH-F W4373 was shot down between Neuss and Holziem during a raid on Dusseldorf (part of a force of 326 Lancasters, 202 Halifaxes, 143 Wellingtons, 99 Stirlings and 13 Mosquitoes).

The full crew of PH-F W4373 on this mission were:

    • Pilot - Flight Lieutenant Patrick Raymond Ford (aged 22, Royal Australian Air Force) Killed. A414132.
    • Navigator (Nav) - Sgt James Albert Osborn (aged 25) Killed. 657839.
    • Wireless Technician (W.T.) - Sgt Myer Harris (aged 22) Killed. 953174.
    • Bomb Aimer (B.A.) - Sgt Geoffrey William Twitty (aged 20) Killed. 1235304
    • Flight Engineer (Eng.) - Sgt Reginald Arthur Charles Avery (aged 20) Killed. 1336681.
    • Mid-Upper Gunner (M.U.G.) - Sgt Frederick Anderson (aged 22) Killed. 626653.
    • Rear Gunner (R.G.) - Sgt Marcus Walter Stone (aged 21) Killed. 1308435.

All 7 crew members are buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, they were originally buried in Dusseldorf Northern Cemetery.

I would be very interested to hear any information anybody might have about Frederick's time in the RAF and the crew members he served with.

F/O. Raymond Joseph Gauvreau DFC. 626 Squadron

    Ray Gauvreau

D.F.C. London Gazette 13th of February 1945. The Recommendation, dated 5th of November 1944, states: 'Flying Officer Gauvreau, a Canadian, as pilot and captain of aircraft has carried out 30 operational sorties against the enemy. These sorties have included such important targets as Kiel, Stuttgart (three attacks), Stettin and Russelheim. Throughout this, his first tour of operations, Flying Officer Gauvreau has shown himself to be a competent and skillful pilot and his keen offensive spirit coupled with his fearlessness has set a magnificent example to his crew. His captaincy and determination have been of a high order enabling him at all times to drive home his attacks to the fullest advantage. I recommend that Flying Officer Gauvreau’s fine record and devotion to duty be rewarded by the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.'

Raymond Gauvreau was born on 30th September 1921 in Ottawa, Ontario, and was educated at LaSalle Academy, The Glebe, Ottawa. He served with the Cameron Highlanders from 1940 to 1942 and was employed at Ottawa Car and Aircraft Limited, before enlisting with the Royal Canadian Air Force at No. 5 Manning Depot in Lachine, Quebec, on 30th of April 1942.

Receiving his wings as a Sergeant Pilot on 25th of June 1943, he proceeded to England in July of that year, and after serving with No. 30 Operational Training Unit at R.A.F. Seighford, Staffordshire, he was commissioned Pilot Officer in April 1944. Posted to No. 626 Squadron at R.A.F. Wickenby, Lincolnshire on 16th of June 1944.

He later reflected on the creation of his flight crew, along with another pilot he had met getting ready for his first mission which would prove to be a fatal one: "I served with the 626 Squadron in England, from an airport called Wickenby. I started right into the Lancasters. They sent me to a station in central England where they had a variety of every crew member imaginable, from gunners to navigators, but not pilots. I was sent to that station with a date at a certain point to pick out six men to join me as my crew members. I was completely in the dark about what it involved, but when I got to it, I got to this big building and opened the door and it looked like I was entering a huge double gymnasium, loaded with people who were all aircrew members of different stations in an aircraft, from a tail gunner to a navigator. I immediately closed the door and stood back, and said, I’ve got to go in there and pick out six men, and I don’t know a soul? There was nobody to talk to. I was all by myself. I finally said a prayer, and I said, “Lord, help me to do this.” I walked in and before I could even close the door, there was a great big guy stood in front of me and says, "my name is George MacIntosh from [Fort] MacLeod, Alberta, I’m a navigator and I’d like to join your crew, will you take me on?" I says, "you bet, George, shake hands." And as we were shaking hands, five more men came walking right over, and I signed all of them on; and that became my crew. Oh, one other Canadian was John Halliday from Welland, Ontario and the rest were British chaps from a variety of places in England. After I had completed six trips, my first six trips, a young pilot came to my billet; and he was allocated the extra bed that I had in that particular billet. And since he was just starting off his trips – that night he was going to have his first trip while I was having my eighth: it was my eighth trip; it was his first trip – I got acquainted with him and helped him to unpack his luggage, and so forth. He took a photograph and put it on the table between our beds; and it was a picture of his wife and his one-year-old daughter back home in Winnipeg. And, however, we went to the flights later on and got ready for my usual bombing trip; and when I got back, about 2:30 in the morning, he hadn’t yet arrived. So I stretched out on the bed and waited for him, so we could talk over what happened. A short time later, a knock came on the door and it was my station commander who said, “Ray, I’m sorry to tell you this, but your friend has not returned, will you please repack his luggage so we can send it back to his wife in Canada.” It left me with real sad memories thinking about my wife whom I married just two weeks before I left for overseas."

Gauvreau and his crew flew numerous sorties over ten locations in France, bombing various targets between 20thof June and 19th of July 1944, including Reims, Liegscourt, Vaires, Saint Pol, Viezon-Ville, Domleger, Orleans, Foret-de-Croc, Caen (twice) and Tours. The month of July would conclude with missions to Courtrai, Belgium on 20 July and over a span of five days, from 23 to 28 July, three sorties to Germany: Kiel and Stuttgart (twice). In the period between 8 August and 19 October 1944, further sorties were flown to France (Aire, Falaise Sector, Le Havre, Calais and Cap Oriz Nes), Holland (Volkel, Gent, Eindhoven and Weskapelle), Belgium (Frederick Hendric), and Germany (Russelsheim, Stettin, Saarbrucken, Duisburg (twice) and Stuttgart).

At the end of his tour he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. By his own recollection, Gauvreau dropped a bomb over Caen, which was marked with the personal message 'To Adolf, from the Ottawa Car and Aircraft Limited of Ottawa'. He died in Ottawa in August 2015, at the age of 93.
