223425 Lt. Harry Ormrod British Army 8th Btn. Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry from:Stretford (d.1st July 1916) Lt Harry Ormrod died on the 1st of July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. He was 21 years old, and held a B.A. from Manchester University. Barry Ormrod Add to this record.    Additional Information: Harry was born in 1895 at Hulme, Manchester, the son of John and Alice Ormrod. He entered Manchester University in 1913 gaining a B.A in 1916. Harry was a member of the University Officer Training Corps and on graduation in January 1916 he enlisted and was commissioned in February 1916 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th (Service) Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. After training he joined them on the Western Front just before the Battle of the Somme began. The battalion went over the top on the morning of 1st July 1916 with 25 officers, the Medical Officer (M.O.) and 659 men. At the end of the day the M.O. brought out 110 men, all that was left. Every officer was killed or wounded within minutes of going over the top. Harry was among the former, hit and killed as he led his men forward.
