210182 Rfm. Arthur Horton British Army 7th Service Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment from:Smethwick (d.3rd Oct 1915) Arthur Horton joined up in August 1914 with his brother John at Winchester. Arthur Horton was a Rifleman in the 7th Service Battalion and John was a Rifleman in the 9th Service Battalion. John was given a medical discharge one month later. He went on to join the Royal Engineers T.A as a Sapper in May 1915 until his discharge in March 1918. He was wounded in 1917 and also classed as 'Shell Shock'. Arthur Horton died of wounds on the 3rd Oct 1915 and is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery. Paul Burns Add to this record.    Additional Information: Arthur Horton as a Rifleman joined 7th Service Battalion, Kings Royal Rifles and John Horton joined as a Rifleman the 9th Service Battalion, Kings Royal Rifles at Winchester. My Grandfather John Horton was discharged from the Battalion after a month but did join the the Royal Engineers T.A - which in 1916 became part of the regular army. 7th S. Battalion were attached to 41st Brigade in the 14th Light Division, moved to Aldershot, moved to Grayshott in Nov 1914, Feb 1915 moved to Bordon. Returned to Aldershot March 1915. Landed at Boulogne 17/18 July 1915. Then moved to Renescure, Aire-sur-la-lys, Haverskerque Merville Estaires On the 29th September 1915, while at Railway Wood, his trench was hit by shells, 5 were wounded and Arthur was one of them, he was taken to Etaples Military Hospital and died 3rd Oct 1915 of his wounds.
