The SS Konigin Luise The SS Konigin Luise was a German steam ferry, built by AG Vulcan Stettin in 1913, for service with the Hamburg America Line, operating between Hamburg and Holland. At the outbreak of war she was taken over by the Kaiserliche Marine as an auxiliary minelayer carrying 200 naval mines, she was painted in the black, buff, and yellow colours of the steamers of the Great Eastern Railway that sailed between Harwich and the Hook of Holland and on the 4th of August 1914 set out to lay mines off the Thames Estuary. She was sighted by fishing vessels and the British light cruiser HMS Amphion along with destroyers HMS Lance and HMS Landrail were sent to investigate. Once located, HMS Amphion began to fire on the fleeing Königin Luise as she attempted to escape to neutral waters to the south-east through the minefield she had just laid. Under heavy and accurate fire, Commander Biermann ordered the scuttling of the ship. The crew abandoned the Königin Luise, which soon rolled over to port and sank at 12:22 on the 5th of August 1914, the first German Naval loss of the war. 46 of the 100 crew were rescued by the British vessels Looking for help with Family History Research?      Please read our Family History FAQ's Thanks to everyone who attended our event We are now on Facebook. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? If so please let us know. Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?" We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.
