HMHS St Andrew was a Military Hospital Ship. She was built by John Brown Clydebank in 1908 for the Fishguard & Rosslare Railways and Harbours Board, she was equipped for 180 casulaties. She was commissioned in the first month of the Great War, she made her first trip to Rouen and Southampton and continued operating in the channel transporting casualties from France back to Britain. In 1930 she was renamed Fishguard, in order that the new St Andrew could be named, the second ship later served as a Hospital Ship in WWII. The records I have are from May 1917 when my grandfather was wounded in action during the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt. He was transferred from Boulogne and went to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Nettley, aboard the St. Andrew. The records I have are Australian Military records, written at the time.

If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? If so please let us know. Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?" We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember. Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice. Contact us. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc. Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives.
