World War 1 One ww1 wwII greatwar greatHMS Duke of Albany
The Duke of Albany was built for the joint Lancashire& Yorkshire Railway/London & North Western Railway (LYR/LNWR) Fleetwood-Belfast and entered service in 1907, the last of the classic Fleetwood Dukes. Her career as a front line steamer was short, superseded by two turbine Dukes in 1909. She then ran mainly relief and extra services. The Duke of Albany was seconded in October 1914 as an Armed Boarding Steamer, HMS Duke of Albany carrying pennant number M.11. Armed Boarding Vessels were used to stop and inspect neutral ships to ensure they were not assisting Germany's war effort. Since this entailed remaining stationary, it placed them at great risk of U-boat attack.
On the 25th August 1916 she was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank 20 miles east of Pentland Skerries off the Orkneys.

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Great War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
