Duchess of Richmond, launched in 1910 (354 tons gross) was one of the ferries operating between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight between 1910 and 1915. Requisitioned in 1915, she became a Patrol Paddler and was mined on the 28th June, 1919. HMS Duchess of Richmond, a 354 ton British Paddle Steamer built in 1910 by D & W Henderson Ltd, Glasgow, Yard No 471 for the London Brighton & South Coast and London & South West Railway Companies (jointly). She was powered by a steam, diagonal compound 2cylinder, 159bhp giving 15 knots. was one of the ferries operating between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight between 1910 and 1915. In 1915 she was requisitioned as minesweeper. She survived the war but blew up after striking a mine whilst performing minesweeping duties in the Aegean Sea on the 28th June 1919. Two of her crew were lost; Telegraphist Lews Yates, aged 19 and Stoker 2nd Class George Garnett Hurst RN aged 28 serving with the Mine Clearance Service, he had served in Flanders, 1915 to 1918 with the 4th Bn. South Lancs Regt.

We are also looking for recollections from the previous generation, please do ask elderly relatives if they recall any tales of life during the Great War told to them by older family members or friends and enter their recollections so that they can be preserved in our archive.
