HMS Cressy was one of three old Cressy class armoured cruisers, known as Cruiser Force C, situated in the Broad Fourteens of the North Sea. Although HMS Cressy was the Royal Navy's first armoured cruiser, the Cressy class was considered too old and slow to be put up against modern German ships, and were referred to as the Live Bait Squadron. HMS Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue, on patrol on the 22nd September 1914, were torpedoed by U-9 in an area where German submarines were not expected. Survivors were picked up by nearby merchant ships and trawlers: 837 rescued, 1459 lost, many of which were reserves and cadets. A court of inquiry was set up with some blame apportioned to all the senior officers of the three lost cruisers.

Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?"We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Great War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
