HMS Cornwallis was a Duncan-class pre-dreadnought battleship built by Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co at Blackwall, 1899, launched 1901, completed 1904. She was heavily armed with four 12-inch guns, twelve 6-Inch guns, ten 12-pounders, six 3-pounders two machine guns and four 18-inch submerged torpedo tubes. Her speed was 19 knots, complement 720, displacement 14000 tons. HMS Cornwallis was in the Mediterranean Fleet, 1904, the Channel Fleet, 1905, and the Atlantic Fleet 1907, returning to Malta 1909. In 1912 the Mediterranean Fleet became the 4th Battle Squadron, Home Fleet, based at Gibraltar. August 1914 Cornwallis was assigned to the 3rd Battle Squadron in the Grand Fleet for patrol duties. She then joined the 3rd Battle Squadron at Scapa Flow. January 1915 Cornwallis participated in all the operations of the Dardanelles Campaign, being the last large ship to leave Suvla Bay. Cornwallis then joined the Suez Canal Patrol in January 1916 and did convoy duty in the Indian Ocean.
On 9th January 1917, Cornwallis was torpedoed by U-32 in the eastern Mediterranean. 15 men were killed by the torpedo, the rest taken off before she sank.
