HMS Contest was an Acasta Class Destroyer that joined the 4th Flotilla on completion (January 1913) and served with the Grand Fleet on the outbreak of war. Such Destroyers were used for many roles including screening larger warships against enemy torpedo craft (including submarines), convoy escort, patrol, offensive torpedo attacks. In the summer of 1916 she was at the Humber, then Portsmouth, then Devonport on convoy escort and patrol duties in 1917.
HMS Contest was torpedoed in the English Channel on the 18th September 1917 by a U-boat, 50 men were rescued from her crew of 77.

My Great Uncle was one of the crew who was killed on this night. The Contest was torpedoed on the 18th September at midnight. in the North Atlantic in the South Western Approaches to the English Channel - torpedoed by German U-boat. Possibly one of the ships transferred to Devonport and on convoy escort or patrol duties. Her wartime crew was around 77. Fifty men were picked up
