HMS Brilliant was a light Apollo class cruiser of the British Royal Navy which served from 1893 to 1918 in various colonial posts. In 1906 she joined the Newfoundland Fisheries Service and remained on duty in Newfoundland's waters until 1911. She returned to the British Isles and was a hastily converted into a minelayer for War service. In April 1918, Brilliant was to be deliberately scuttled in the mouth of Ostend harbour in Belgium during the failed First Ostend Raid. This was intended to block the harbour mouth and prevent the transit of German U-boats and other raiding craft from Bruges to the North Sea. German countermeasures were however too effective, and Brilliant and fellow blockship HMS Sirius were eventually scuttled by their crews outside the harbour mouth after running aground on a sandbank. The wrecks were broken up postwar.

Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial?
If so please let us know.
Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?"We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.

Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Great War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
