World War 1 One ww1 wwII greatwar greatHMS Avenger
HMS Avenger was an armed Merchant Cruiser, launched in 1915 as the Aotearoa for the Union Steamship Company, New Zealand was requisitioned and completed as HMS Avenger and was commissioned in March 1916.
At the beginning of World War I British passenger liners were requisitioned by the Royal Navy for conversion to Armed Merchant Cruisers to form the 10th Cruiser Squadron, relieving regular cruisers by undertaking lone patrols, and later, convoy escort duties. The 10th Cruiser Squadron was used to maintain the blockade of the North Sea, its patrol area extending from the Norwegian coast far into the Atlantic and covering all approaches to the European continent from a northerly direction. In so doing they relieved twenty or more regular Navy cruisers for other duties. Forty-one different converted passenger ships served with the Squadron for some length of time, each armed with guns up to 6-inch calibre.HMS Avenger was torpedoed by U-boat U69 14th June 1917 and sunk in the North Atlantic.

Lt.(E) William James Urquhart HMS Avenger
My father was aboard the Avenger when it was sunk in 1917. He said all he got out with was his camera and I have the photos he took of the ship going down and of the men aboard the life boat.
Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial?
If so please let us know.
Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?"We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
