World War 1 One ww1 wwII greatwar greatHMS Arethusa
Arethusa Class light cruisers were generally built before World War I. These vessels were a new and very fast type of light cruiser, burning oil fuel only and capable of steaming thirty knots or more, carrying an armament of two 6-inch and six 4-inch guns for the purpose of attacking and overpowering hostile destroyers. While officially called a light armoured cruiser, they really a destroyer of destroyers. HMS Arethusa, launched 26th August 1914, was part of the Harwich Force and leader of the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla. Arethusa took part in the Battle of Heligoland Bight, 28th August 1914, was attacked, damaged and repaired. Arethusa was in the battle of Dogger Bank, 24 January 1915. She hit a mine off Felixstowe on 11th February 1916 and ran aground on Cutler Shoal and was abandoned.

List of those who served on HMS Arethusa during The Great War

Wilfred Henry Richards HMS Anchusa (d.16th July 1918)
I have recently discovered postcards written by Wilfred to his wife Elsie (our Grandfather and Grandmother)which indicate he was writing to her weeks after he was killed. Official documents indicate the ship he was torpedoed on (H.M.S. Anchusa) was sunk on 16th July 1918 and yet postcards have dates of August 1918. Has anybody any similar tales about dates?
Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial?
If so please let us know.
Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?"We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Great War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
