The Wartime Memories Project - The Great War - Day by Day



23rd December 1915

On this day:


  • London Batteries in Action   6th County of London Brigade RFA at Annequin. From 0630 to 0800 the 16th London Battery fired forty three Shrapnel and seventy one H.E. on Cross Trench. Certain registrations took place during the day. At 0940 the 15th London Battery fired twenty eight rounds on G.4.b.2.6. and stopped enemy firing on A.28 and D.2.x. At 1145 the 15th London Battery fired thirty rounds on A.28.c.6.7, also stopping enemy fire. At 1145 the 16th Battery fired ten Shrapnel and twenty one H.E. on A.28.d.2.1 in reply to enemy shelling of front line trenches. From 0800 to 1400 the 19th London Battery fired three hundred and fifty seven Shrapnel and forty two H.E. on Cross Trench. and from 1400 to 2000 the Battery fired one hundred shrapnel and ninety five H.E. on Cross Trench junctions. At 1100 the enemy shelled the Battalion in Quarry Alley with 5.9s. At 1430 the 17th London Battery fired thirty rounds on fixed periscope and dugouts with loopholes at G.28.d.--. (Note: 5.9s are British term for German 150mm gun shells.)

  • 9th Lancers Route March & Horses Inspected    9th Lancers in billets at HQ Enquin. Brigadier General Commanding 2nd Cavalry Brigade inspected the horses of the Regiment for casting for non-veterinary reasons. Veterinary Officer inspected all the horses of the Regiment. The 9th Lancers dismounted company and Machine Gun Section went for a short Route march. Major Grenfell & Lieutenant Gisborne returned from trench course. 1 Other Rank to Temporary Hospital.
