The Wartime Memories Project - The Great War - Day by Day

2nd November 1915

On this day:

  • Daily Battery Activity   6th County of London Brigade RFA are at Mazingarbe. There was a concentration of fire on trenches Hotel.25.b.5.5 Hotel.25.b.7. and Hotel.13.d.2.0 H.13.d.8.4 at 1630 and 1845. During the day the Germans shelled communication trenches in section A2 and trench in G.30.d. It seems that our howitzers do not retaliate sufficiently in return with their 5.9s. German field guns invariably cease fire when our field guns retaliate. 2/Lt J.A.W. Petro and 2/Lt A.F. Blackwell proceeded to England on 9 days leave of absence. As the journey has now to be undertaken via La Havre instead of Boulogne an 2 extra days are allowed. 2/Lt Hamilton-Davis transferred from the 47th Divisional Ammunition Column to the 6th London Brigade RFA.

Note - the reference to German shells as 5.9's. This was a common term for the German 15cm SFH.02 Gun. It's bore is 150mm which is approx. 5.9 inches, hence the 5.9 nickname.
