Thomas Oran Herring
British Army 18th Btn. Durham Light Infantry
Thomas Herring was born in Tudhoe in 1895 and died on the Somme 1916 whilsts serving with the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.

Thomas Oran Herring born in Tudhoe was aged 27 years 1 month, occupation plumber, and lived at 95 Durham Road, Spennymoor with his parents William & Margaret (nee Mann) Herring when he attested for service on 9th December 1915. He was placed on the army reserve and mobilized on 27th January 1916 as Pte 30170 18th Bn DLI. Entered France on 2nd July 1916 with 18/DLI and on 13th July 1916 he was attached to the 1/6th West Yorks Regiment; he was killed in action on 25th July 1916. His medals are named to the DLI.
Thomas played as goalkeeper for Spennymoor Heroes Football Club in the 1915 season and had signed to play in goal for Spennymoor United.
Pension records have date of death as 28th July.
His name is recorded on Loos Memorial, France; Spennymoor War Memorial; St David's Church, Tudhoe memorial, and St Andrew,s Church memorial, Spennymoor.
