237369 Pte. Arthur Leslie Vernon Lewis British Army 8th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment from:Leicester Arthur Lewis joined up in Scarborough in September 1914, whilst on holiday. Although he joined up at the local cavalry depot, he was assigned to the East Yorkshire Regiment. He fought at Loos in September 1915 and was wounded, being shot in the ankle. He was sent to Dublin to convalesce. Back in action, he fought on the Somme, and was captured on the first day of the final battle, in November 1916. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner, and was sent to work on a farm in the village of Hornerkirchen, north of Hamburg. He died in 1984, aged 91.
