Additional Information:

My Grandmother's Uncle, George Povall (9820 - Lance Corporal - 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers) was killed on the same day. On the day he died, 21st October 1916, the 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers were heavily involved in the fighting at Regina Trench, Mouquet Farm. The 11th Bns objective was a stretch of Regina Trench some 500 yards long. The first wave was to consist of B Company on the right and C Company on the left, with A Company as the second wave. The Battalion at that time was only 400 men, due to casualties from earlier battles. At 0300 hrs on the 21st, they moved into position. It was a sharp frosty night. At dawn they were ready and following the supporting Artillery barrage, they finally closed with the enemy in Regina Trench. It was a very grim task as the German defenders had to be taken out with the bayonet, 2nd Lt Bewick personally bayoneting 4 of them. By 1250 hrs, the objective had been taken, the surviving Germans had surrendered. The 11th Bn had lost 15 dead, 114 wounded and 26 missing. George Povall being one of those killed in action. The whole Battalion were paraded in front of General Sir Douglas Haig a few days later, to be congratulated.
