225666 L/Cpl. Henry Edward Atkinson British Army 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment from:Poplar, Middlesex (d.12th June 1915) Harry Atkinson was stationed in Portsmouth with the Battalion prior to the war. Before leaving for France he was visited by his family at the Barracks. His younger brother Sidney remembered this visit, sitting round with the soldiers singing songs and making merry. Harry would have been at Mons, Frameries and Le Cateau. It is believed he stayed with the Battalion all the way through to June 1915. The Battalion were involved in an attack on Hooge Chateau Stables and an earth works. Here on the night of the 2/3rd Harry was wounded and captured by the Germans, taken at some point to a field hospital near Menin. Here he died of wounds on the 12th of June 1915. He has a memorial stone in the IWGC area of the cemetery in Halluin the French side of Menin. RIP uncle Harry.
