217902 Pte. Andrew Turnbull British Army 2nd Batalion Royal Scots Fusiliers from:Glasgow, Scotland (d.21st Mar 1918) Andrew Turnbull was my great grandfather.`he served as a private with the Royal Scots Fusiliers 2nd Battalion, No. 26587. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918 at The Somme. This was the first day of the last big offensive against the Germans.
He was born in November 1876 in Glasgow and was a Plasterer by trade. He married Alexanderina McInnes in 1899. Alexanderina was from the Highlands of Scotland, they had eight children together but their youngest, Robert, died as a baby in 1914. My Grandpa, Charles Fyfe Turnbull was the second child and eldest son in the family.
My Great Grandpa arrived in Boulange, December 1916 and served in France till March 1918 when he was killed in action. He is commemorated at Pozieres Cemetery, and is also named in the Roll of Honour which is kept in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow.
According to his Service Records, he was wounded in February 1917 and was not fit to return to the front till March 1917. He was granted a short leave to return home from 27th January to 10th February 1918.
He was killed on 21st March 1918. His beloved wife, Alexanderina, lived till the age of 88.
My Great Grandpa and all soldiers suffered horrors unknown to us in the trenches of the First World War and we would not have our freedom today if it were not for them. We must never forget their sacrifice.
