Patrick McLaughlin, Company Sergeant Major served in "X" Coy. 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was killed in action age 33 on the 27th March 1916. He is remembered at Palmer Cenotaph, St Paul's Church and on the Ypres(Menin Gate)Memorial. His medal card records the award of the 1915 Star, War and Victory Medals.

Patrick was born and enlisted in Jarrow, son of Michael and Mary McLaughlin (nee Costella) of 32 Stanley Street Jarrow. He was married to Helena McLaughlin (nee McKenna) of 1 James Street Hebburn.

The Newcastle Daily Journal of Friday 7th of April 1916 reads:

"The Roll of Honour Casualties in North Country Regiments -

The following casualties have been officially notified:

Killed - Official information has been received at Jarrow that Company Sergeant Major Patrick McLaughlin, who was formerly a commissionaire at Palmers Works, Jarrow, and whose home was in Stanley Street, was killed in action on March 27. Lt Crawford has written to Mrs McLaughlin stating 'We had just captured the German trenches when he was struck by a bullet that killed him instantaneously. He was loved and respected by all the officers and men in the company, and I feel personally his loss more than words can convey".
