Arthur Blackwood Gowan served as a Lieutenant in the 1st/3rd Durham Field Company, Royal Engineers. He was aged 19 when died on 14th July 1916.
Son of Arthur Byram Gowan and Agnes Jane Gowan of 7 Brandling Park Newcastle, His father Arthur Byram Gowan was Managing Director of Palmer Shipbuilders in Jarrow.
Arthur is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, on the Palmer Cenotaph (north face) Jarrow. He is commemorated on the Triptych in St. Paul's Church Jarrow and at Christ Church in Jarrow. A ferry that crossed the River Tyne from Jarrow to Howdon was named after him, the A.B.Gowan.
