World War 1 One ww1 wwII greatwar greatThe 44th Btn. AIF
The 44th Battalion, 11th Brigade, 3rd Australian Division, was raised at Claremont, Western Australia in February 1916 and soon became known as “Old Bill’s Thousand” after its first commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel William Mansbridge. The 44th Btn departed from Fremantle on the 6th of June 1916 onboard the Suevic heading for England. A further reinforcements would follow, the last leaving Albany on the 24th of July 1917. Arriving in England the 44th Battalion spent the next few months training and crossed to France on the 27th of November and went in to the front line trenches for the first time on the 29th of December 1916.
Their first major action was the Battle of Messines, launched on the 7th of June 1917, when the battalion was in reserve near Ploegsteert Wood, close to the Ultimo and Factory Farm mines, following the 9th and 10th Division after the main objectives on the Black Line had been captured and pushing forward to the next objectives on the Oosttaverne Line in the afternoon of the 7th of June.
The 44th Battalion went onto the Battle of Passchendaele. In 1918 they saw action in the Spring Offensive when the enemy pushed through the lines, their final action of the war was at the St Quentin Canal. The 44th Battalion was disbanded in May 1919.
